FullaBella's Journal, 04 Sep 13

I'm calling on my party animal wedding planner celebration experiencer friends for HELP.

DH turns 65 next month and I'm trying to come up with things to make it memorable but not miserable so I'm casting out and asking for ideas and suggestions.

Keep in mind this is a very sick man who goes NOWHERE beyond bed to chair & back. He also tires quickly, cannot stand too many people at any one time nor any one person for any length of time. And, he wants for and needs nothing of the traditional gifts (clothes, cologne, jewelry, etc)

This is what I've come up with so far ... so I'm asking for suggestions more as I only have one shot at his 65th birthday:

Surprise him when he wakes with a living room full of helium inflated balloons of varying shapes and sizes - am thinking some really fun ones like pot of gold, superman, batman, etc., mixed in among the BD & '65th' balloons with ribbons and some sinkers to have them at variable lengths.

I'm also going to pick up some coins from 1948 (his birth year) and put them in little personalized BD holders on certain balloons as hostess gifts for those I do invite who will be his

Closest Friends and business associates only - maybe a couple of dozen max staggered throughout the day so I'll make a decorated table in the living room to serve

Cake pops, miniature cupcakes and cookies all BD iced in different colors and a decorated bucket of bottled water & asst soda's so that no one coming at the end has to accept the last of a massacred cake and watered down punch and

I'm coordinating with our two local papers now (even if I have to pay to have it done) to do a feature story on him (local businessman celebrates 65th bd ) and

We have this really great photo of him from 20 years ago that has become his 'hallmark' photo - he was at a chili cookout & it's a great up close face photo with him in a cowboy hat - very handsome - I'm going to have our printer coordinate blowing it up on 30x40 foam board with a large margin for people to sign as they visit (like signing a card) and will have it propped on an easel decorated all festive with varying color markers for the signers

A helium filled 'air shark' that can be remote controlled to have fun with that day.

Ok - that's what I've got. Your turns! Please help me - I don't get out much or go to parties... I would love to read your suggestions of things you enjoyed at other parties that would work with him. And yes, I even considered a stripper but I'd like to pull the day off with his dignity in place.

Ooh where's Sk1nny Pam when you need her. She's the queen of these things. And Ruth. Although you have a great start there. Bella. Such a good wife.

I think you sound like you've got a lot planned already and it sounds great! For my mom's 60th I got her a toy, movie, and book from her birth year. I just saw at an open house, someone had everyone use colorful ink to put their fingerprints like balloons on a posterboard and sign their names on the balloon tails, that was cute. I think with what you already have planned, he'll be amazed!

You've got a ton of fabulous, original ideas already! A balloon arch is cool (I used to work at a balloon store and did lots of decorating at weddings and events). You could do just a single row or make it thicker... all are attached to fishing line and you can weight the ends down with lots of things - decorate the weights with mylar or wrapping paper and ribbons. In addition to the "hallmark" photo on display, it might be cute to have pictures from all stages of his life on display. It might not be your cup of tea, but for my parents' 40th anniversary I made up a song (sung to the tune of the theme from Gilligan's Island!) and sung it for them in front of everyone at the party. I'm not much of a singer but it got great reception :)

Sounds like you have a lot of great ideas! You can make photo books online if you wanted to put some important photos together in a small book. I did it for my vacation photos once and it came out cute. It wasn't expensive either. I used York photo but I know there are other companies that do it too. Good luck with the planning

You sure don't need any help from me. I am not creative at the least. I think you should come here and help me plan a party...lol Your husband will love every bit of it. Such attention to detail. I just know everything will turn out wonderful. I do like the song idea that Evelyn has. I'll bet that would be lots of fun.

I also think you have a really good handle on his party. I'll be stealing a few of those ideas!! How about putting together a video to play all day of things he's done, places he's gone to, tv shows etc. from 1948 until now, on a loop, so everyone who shows up can watch along with DH. Thats the only idea I could think of. Hope it comes together for you!!

Bella, what you have planned sounds wonderful. I like the idea of the big photo with room for people to sign beside it, that will be a great keepsake. And all the other foods, drinks, etc sound like it will be a lovely day. I can't think of anything else you could possibly do. [glad the coconut oil mystery is solved, as in why your nails are so nice :) ]

Wow is there anything left to suggest? This all sounds so wonderful. I like the tiny 6 oz bottles of Italian Aranciata (Orange) and Limonata (Lemon) fruit flavored Sanpellegrino waters in metal buckets on ice. Each bucket has a bottle opener attached with ribbon. Amazon.com has this amazingly delicious flavored water. I love the cupcake idea (pure genius). Maybe a photo of the home where he was born if you put a collage or book of photos together with old elem.,jr. high, high school and college or sports/playing photos. Or you could also use that great picture of him as the cover of a recipe book with all of his favorite recipes that you could give out as favors too.

See... y'all have helped already :-) Totally forgot about the MUSIC - and while it'll be a struggle to get him to mute the TV for very long ... one of our friends is a musician and he's going to come perform 'You Got it' *by Roy Orbison - ((it's our Song)). Also - I added an 'Remote control Killer Air Whale' to the order as I imagine his guests will want to get into an 'air raid war' or something ...plus, I want one too when it's all over :-) Love the idea of the balloon arch and the bottled beverages (rather than canned) that will definitely give it a classy touch. I found a 'personalized galvanized beverage tub with stand' on Amazon and am considering that - can use it afterward as a planter. Keep the ideas coming :-) Thanks everyone!

LOL.. 'Meet Joe Black' is on TV this morning (where Brad Pitt ::death::: takes Anthony Hopkins on his 65th BD) I'm trying to pick up ideas... just not all of them... not inviting Joe.

oh such black humour! Yes, no inviting Joe, that's for sure! Good movie though.

:-) yeah... watching the ending... they have fireworks - can't do that indoors but now I'm thinking about a fireworks DVD on his 73" TV :-)

That's a great idea! If you can get him to turn off his usual programming for the 'event' - lol
