I'm really enjoying my walks here at Rose Pond in southeastern Idaho. Yesterday I walked further than I usually do, just so I could explore a little longer.

Here are some new pictures. I'll describe them for you.

1) This is my campsite next to Rose Pond. Camping next to the water is always a special treat.

2) The Snake River flows beside the walking path. Here are some fisherman I saw on the river.

3) A Tule Bluet (Enallagma carunculatum) damselfly.

4) Fisherman also fish Rose Pond.

5) This wildflower is Woods' rose (Rosa woodsii var. ultramontana).

6) I found a sunflower (Helianthus annuus) growing beside the Snake River.

7) Amur Maple (Acer ginnala) trees are not native to this area. Someone must have planted one here.

8) There's lots and lots of showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) growing here.

9) This is a close-up of an elderberry (Sambucus nigra) bloom.

10) The moon rising over Rose Pond.

Happy Independence Day, everyone! 🇺🇸

Gorgeous photos, Lonnie! 🤩 The last is my favorite of this set. Do you guys ever take a boat or a kayak out on one of these rivers/ponds? That would be a great way to see things from the water.

I've been kayaking .. once, very briefly. I borrowed a friend's kayak so I could try it. I got to the middle of a reservoir that was more than 80 feet deep and then leaned over a little too far, which caused the kayak to topple. I kinda panicked when my feet couldn't touch bottom and I didn't know how I was gonna get back on the kayak. I made it back on in less than a minute and survived, obviously, but I was done for the day after that. I'm probably ready to try it again, but we don't have kayaks. Next time I'm somewhere they rent them, or if someone lets me borrow one again, I'll give it another shot. It seems like it would be fun once I get the hang of it. I also think I'd really like to ride on a pontoon and sip cocktails. Now, that's definitely in my wheelhouse! 🙂

How do you guys decide where you are heading? Is there anywhere that you call home?Do you have some spots that you frequent repeatedly?

Hi, DP! We follow the mild weather! We have AC and heat, but it's cheaper if we don't use them so in the winter we stay down south, and move around the rest of the year wherever it's not too hot. The closest thing to "home" is probably the area around Yuma, AZ because that's where we've been spending the winter. There we can pay $180 and that covers our campsite, access to water, sewer and trash disposal for a whole 7 months! We don't usually stay the whole 7 months, but we could. I should mention that we're officially Floridians, because you don't have to have a physical address to register there to vote, get tags and a driver's license, etc. So that could be considered home as well. This year we had planned to go see Mt. Rushmore and Devil's Tower (and other things along the way), but we decided not to, so we could stay safe from the virus, so we're visiting some of the places we've been to before, but some new ones too. We have favorite campsite that we like to return to, like Glacier Rim in Montana where we will return later this year,. It's nice to return to places we already know, because we also already know where to get water, where to dump, where the stores are, etc.

Have you ever driven up to Alaska? Love the pictures of course, I think my favorite this time is the wild roses, though it's hard to say. I love the river pictures, because I love being out on the water. I've never been kayaking; I would have loved to do so, it just never happened. Thank you for sharing.

I'm glad you asked, Shir! Yes! We drove to Alaska last year! It was the most amazing trip! So fun too! If you'd like to see the pictures I took in Alaska, they're posted at the following address. You may not recognize me though. I was 75 pounds heavier then. The photos are here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/lonniehuffman/0y40m2

Lonnie, oh gosh, you poor thing! That does sound scary and would put me off kayaking for a while too. 🙈 I’ve only kayaked in very shallow areas in the South Carolina marshes.. it’s really mellow and there are lots of birds and sea life and cool things like that. If I were to topple over, I’d be up to the knee probably. A cocktail on a pontoon sounds amazing and totally my type of thing too. I would pick that over the kayak. 😋 When you’re able to do that, please take lots of photos so I can continue living vicariously through your amazing posts! 😍
