Had my second ever bone scan done. It seems I still have osteopenia BUT I lowered the femur score from -1.0 to -0.9 and my spine score from -1.9 to -1.4! Not great but it shows some reversal in the right direction.

With all the back troubles in my family I knew going into this scan and the last that my spine would probably be ‘bad’. Weight lifting, losing weight and getting more protein in my diet are all I’ve changed in the last two years. We think the improved scores are because of the muscle gain :).

I haven’t exactly been taking calcium and Vit D like I’m supposed to. Oops! That’s on the list to try over the next two years before my next scan. I just wanted to see what each one did to help rather than everything at once.

You reversed the process! I didn't know that that was possible! Good to know!

I’ve read up on it quite a bit. More muscle mass generally means healthier bones. My body doesn’t absorb vitamin d and calcium like it should I guess. I can get my blood work numbers where they need to be by taking 50,000 IUD of vit d but they don’t want me on that much all the time. So I started with gaining muscle mass to see how that effected my scans. Dr said it was potentially a dangerous experiment lol. But I knew my numbers couldn’t go down that much in 2 years based on the research I did. Now let’s see if I can reverse it more with supplements!

From my understanding, you can reverse osteopenia but not full blown osteoporosis. Things like taking vitamin d and calcium to gaining muscle mass are things that can help your bones become stronger. I don’t know if I’ll ever get my numbers back in the ‘normal’ range but I’ll be happy having them stall or get better!

The doctor said it was dangerous to take 50,000 IUD of vitamin D? I have been taking a multi vitamin with vitamin D because at times I get practically 0 in my diet and it also has calcium and that was another low result for me. We have long winters and there isn't enough sunshine either. I hope you get good results when you take the vitamins or maybe you can find it in some food. I assume that you don't like milk products.

No. They just don’t want me on that much all the time for some reason. The ‘dangerous’ part was not taking the supplements and instead just building muscle to see how that effected me. I could’ve gotten worse rather than better.

Oh I see! I just read a little bit about it. I worried about calcium and vitamin D because I don't like milk products but I do now eat Greek yogurt, every day! Good idea to start taking them even though it's not fun. It becomes a habit.

I can’t swallow pills well so I have the chewable ones. That adds 100 kcal to my intake each day. But now I know going over some for two weeks won’t hurt so I’ll start taking them again. I’m lactose intolerant. Even 4 oz of milk bothers me now. I can eat one serving of ice cream and usually be okay. Cheese in moderate amounts doesn’t bother me.

That is all good news! You are very young, so was the early detection tests done because of your other treatments that caused concerns? My mom had serious osteoporosis and has broken so many bones. I'm scared, but I have to just up my diet and my much different lifestyle may keep me from having the same troubles.

They had me do the bone scan because of the chemo and because I had a hysterectomy. Since the first one came back osteopenia I have to do a scan every two years. The breast MRI is my screening to check for breast cancer to see if it’s come back. I should do one every 1-2 years. Since those results came back inconclusive, I now have to have a PET scan. I’m googling like a mad woman lol.

My family dr said if I had drank more milk and taken vitamin d and calcium as a kid and young adult I would’ve been better off probably. Being lactose intolerant means I had very little dairy other than cheese. We didn’t have money for things like vitamins. Of course back then vitamins weren’t as ‘popular’ and my dr didn’t say anything at well checks back then.

Wow... Well, I'm glad you are trying to keep on top of everything now. I've got something going on that they keep wanting me to come back for check after check. 4 times now in a year. It can be so confusing and uncertain knowing whom to trust. Anyway, I hope everything is good with the Pet scan. 🙏 ❤️

Thanks! It’s always best to get it checked out. All the information, especially from multiple sources, can get confusing. If you ever need to talk feel free to message me! Mine could be anything from an infection and ruptured implant to a foreign object my body is just now trying to defend against to a very rare type of cancer. Google sucks in a way because now I’m even more confused lol.
