Ketogenic low-carbohydrate diets have no metabolic advantage over nonketogenic low-carbohydrate diets.

DESIGN:
Twenty adults [body mass index (in kg/m(2)): 34.4 +/- 1.0] were randomly assigned to the KLC (60% of energy as fat, beginning with approximately 5% of energy as carbohydrate) or NLC (30% of energy as fat; approximately 40% of energy as carbohydrate) diet. During the 6-wk trial, participants were sedentary, and 24-h intakes were strictly controlled.

RESULTS:
Mean (+/-SE) weight losses (6.3 +/- 0.6 and 7.2 +/- 0.8 kg in KLC and NLC dieters, respectively; P = 0.324) and fat losses (3.4 and 5.5 kg in KLC and NLC dieters, respectively; P = 0.111) did not differ significantly by group after 6 wk. Blood beta-hydroxybutyrate in the KLC dieters was 3.6 times that in the NLC dieters at week 2 (P = 0.018), and LDL cholesterol was directly correlated with blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (r = 0.297, P = 0.025). Overall, insulin sensitivity and resting energy expenditure increased and serum gamma-glutamyltransferase concentrations decreased in both diet groups during the 6-wk trial (P < 0.05). However, inflammatory risk (arachidonic acid:eicosapentaenoic acid ratios in plasma phospholipids) and perceptions of vigor were more adversely affected by the KLC than by the NLC diet.

CONCLUSIONS:
KLC and NLC diets were equally effective in reducing body weight and insulin resistance, but the KLC diet was associated with several adverse metabolic and emotional effects. The use of ketogenic diets for weight loss is not warranted.

There is this thing called confirmation bias. People tend to be less critical of information that supports their ideas and theories than information that doesn't. The more passionate a person believes the less likely they are to be unbiased. If this study showed that keto was a better diet would the issues that AMT brought up, small sample size and test duration, be more valid to you?

Diablo thinks he knows how to science, and assumes everyone else sciences the same way he does, hence his comment, "The thing is, if there were metabolic ward studies that showed an advantage with keto, keto dieters would share it like crazy." Actually, no, I wouldn't be, "sharing it like crazy", because I know how science actually works; one study proves nothing. Similarly, Diablo likes to tout his own N=1 results, which again, prove nothing. Further, as AMT pointed out, Scientific Consensus on this issue has not been reached. But it's amusing to watch the desperate attempts at a, "drop-the-mic" moment, unfortunately, that mic is still falling, people could be spending their time supporting each other instead of being rude and insecure twerps, there's plenty of room on Fat Secret for all different perspectives.

I just shared it so keto dieters can quit freaking out about knocking themselves out of keto since obviously it doesn't matter. Keto like IF and every diet known to man isn't needed, choose the diet that fits you. Don't shoehorn yourself into a WOE that you may not like because of some pseudoscience or because of a fanboy of keto like Phil.

Phil, idk what you do on Twitter but if it's a handle about keto maybe that explains it. You'll defend keto and never concede that other diets work just as well because you're like a small scale Taubes or Fung. They do the same thing, even when hundreds of metabolic ward studies prove CICO.

I've never argued that other diets don't work nor do I hate on other diets. My activities on Twitter have little to do with Keto, besides Fat Secret & Tim Noakes, the only other Keto-related account I follow is KetoConnect. If people would stop the unwarranted and unjustified attacks on Keto I wouldn't have any reason to get, "defensive".

This is an attack? You see how dumb that claim is or are you blinded by your love for it. It says they are equal not that one is better than the other. Plus metabolic ward studies are the most accurate.

I post these so people can see that they can choose the way of eating they want. There is no advantage to any WoE if you can't stick to it. This is for people who have difficulty with keto. If they don't, more power to them.

It's an attack, you've been putting down Keto for years and acting like people who follow Keto are stupid. You don't build yourself up by trying to drag others down. But I'm done commenting on your deliberately inflammatory troll posts. My comment about, "breaking the bad news to Jason Fung" was admittedly glib, but your repetitive post didn't even warrant that, I should have just refrained. I'll give you credit for one thing, though, you're right that people shouldn't do Keto if they don't like it, that would truly be dumb, but I give people enough credit to not assume they're stupid. It would be nice if everyone had the same respect for others.

Stupid no, maybe ignorant to the facts. Keto is one end of the spectrum while my diet, high-carb, is the other end. There really is no reason to speak of anything in between. If me posting a metabolic ward study to improve people's knowledge is seen an inflammatory, you're just impossible. Bye bye now.

In this day and age, it would be hard for anyone to be, "ignorant of the facts", information is readily and freely available. I don't assume you are ignorant of Keto, and I'm certainly not ignorant of what you constantly assert; we disagree on the conclusions and because there is no scientific consensus neither one of us is right or wrong, we merely disagree, and disparaging anyone over a disagreement is both completely unnecessary and transparent. The only people you are going to win over are the ones that already agree with you. I'm open to all perspectives, that's hardly being, "impossible", but you've said yourself that you, "never claimed to be the most supportive member of this site", and I'm sure no one has ever doubted that, so enjoy your ongoing quest to discredit Keto, as I said above, I'm sure everyone in any way connected to Keto, and their kids, will be devastated. Moving on.

Depends on what you believe on if you're right or wrong. If you believe calories are still fairy farts, you're wrong. And there are many who believe that calories don't matter and that carbs create energy out of thin air, so no, not everyone is on the up and up. Chris is one example of people that I've helped see the light and there are many others. In person as well. People thank me all the time. I'll do my thing, you go do yours.

All diets adhere to CICO, people can choose the one they can adhere to for life. If you disagree with CICO, we have nothing to talk about. No studies have shown an exception to CICO in a metabolic ward. Until then, keto is just another form of calorie restriction.

It really burned you TF up when I called calories Fairy Farts (though I believe I used the alternative spelling, "faerie", cuz I'm cool like that). Whether or not I believe calories are fairy farts doesn't really matter, I just posted it for effect. For a guy who claims you have an awesome sense of humor, you don't.
