laraae's Journal, 14 Apr 19

So my oral surgery has gone from bad to worse. On Monday, the oral surgeon couldn’t get the tooth (lower left) that needed extracting to get numb (after 5 tries 😖). So on Tuesday, my beloved husband drove me back to the oral surgeon’s so I could have the tooth removed under anesthesia. Wednesday, as expected, I had pretty much pain. On Thursday, I called the oral surgeon because the pain was intensifying and I only had a few pain pills left. I’d already told them I’d been on an antibiotic for a week, and after telling me that the bruising on my neck was normal, I got another prescription for some pain pills and went home. Now it’s Friday, and the pain pills aren’t cutting it—and the lymph node on the left side of my neck is hard, the size of an egg, and all bruised. I went back to the oral surgeon, who has now diagnosed “cellulitis”—an infection caused by the tooth that needed to come out. So now I’m on 2 antibiotics and am alternating the pain meds with ibuprofen and my regular back medicine. And using ice packs on my neck/lymph node cellulitis thing. All I can eat are soft foods (shakes, pudding, yogurt, lukewarm soup), and my mouth and lymph node hurts so much that I don’t feel like eating. I have an appointment Monday at the oral surgeon’s, and right now I’m not feeling any better. I’ve never had cellulitis before and I don’t know what can be done. So it’s 2:30 Sunday morning—I can’t sleep—and I’m aggravated and worried. So I’m pouring out my frustration here in a journal entry. Does anyone have any experience with cellulitis? If so, any ideas on what to do? I know there’s a joke somewhere in all this about cellulitis vs. cellulite, but I’m not there just yet. Thanks for listening. 🙁

No joke Please get a second opinion from a new oral surgeon You should not have to suffer so much !!! And that infection must’ve been pretty severe to have a lymph node the size of an egg !!! Please don’t forget second opinions are helpful in most cases 🦷

If you can’t get in to see someone ,go to Emergency room. They will help infection now . Can go to your heart. That’s what my husbands DR. Know them .

Oral antibiotics take 24-36 hours to kick in. If you have a fever or feel that it is getting worse an ER visit would be reasonable. If the doc there felt it were necessary he could order an IV dose of the antibiotic to give a kick start.

Sweetie I understand your pain. Due to several abses and cellulitis my jaw began to think out. I began switching from salt water(warm) to rinsing with biotene. I also switched back and forth between warm and cold compresses. I pray you feel better soon🙋

No idea what are you talking about, but that sounds bad, take care of yourself, Keyteen always gives pretty good advices.

Cellulitis is nasty - painful (as you have discovered) and hard to knock back. (((((hugs))))) and prayers that it gets better soon. I, too, am a veteran of the dental wars and it is NO fun at all.

Need to agree with gsm fan. Know that it is s bacterial infection which I often saw in the field on the lower extremities. Very painful. Know your on 2 antibiotics which is a good thing but my gut and experience is telling me go to ER. Might need an IV antibiotic. Also I would seek an 2nd opinion . Not saying he did anything wrong but two heads better than one. I always appreciated doctors who on their own reached out to other doctors just because. Please take care of yourself

I would also like to add I’m not an alarmist nor do I want to alarm people but this infection can travel through your blood stream / at least with the lower extremities I knew what I was looking at / the lymph node besides swelling cannot observe what’s going on as well feel more comfortable if you had blood work done. Don’t like speaking down about doctors / again not knowing him and his manner of handling events still would feel better if you went to ER You’ll get a benefit from getting a 2nd assessment:diagnosis plus a better handle on your pain

Forget the oral surgeon and go see a medical physician !!!! Then afterwards look for a new dental physician to prevent further issues in the future. Good luck, wish you a better recovery process.

When an area is severely infected, good local anesthesia can be very difficult to obtain, whether it is an arm, leg or a tooth.

Update? Did you go to the ER? Retired wound care RN here...would have been my recommendation...ER visit. Cellulitis means the infection is spreading out and IV antibiotics may be indicated. Also, they can give you a stronger pain med if needed. I hate for anyone to suffer.

FYI: Alternating pain medication with ibuprofen (Advil) is a good recommendation. I would take at least three ibuprofen at a time. It takes 600 mg (Three tabs) to get the anti-inflammatory effect. You can take a maximum of 800 mg three times daily.

@shiny50. Also a retired wound nurse here Amazing how are two minds think alike. Unsure if you were a visiting nurse but experience out there gave me plenty of experience in all aspects besides just doing wound care Enjoyed all but unfortunately my body took the blunt force with two rotator cuff injuries all work related. Sad 😔

Hi thank you everybody! I am doing better now. The swelling is down and being on the second antibiotic seems to have helped. If he been a new oral surgeon I would have definitely gone to the emergency room and/or gotten a second opinion, but having known him since 2005 I trust that he has my best interest in mind and knows what he’s doing. And that’s true about reaching out to other doctors because that’s exactly what he did when I saw him on Friday. My eating has been basically crap since I’ve had this going on: chocolate shakes from Culvers, and almost a whole oatmeal cake my mom made me to help me feel better (bless her heart!), and pudding and yogurt. Started soup Monday, walking yesterday, and today’s my first day back with (lukewarm) coffee. Luckily I’ve only gained a pound, but that’s a small setback in the whole scheme of things. So thanks again for all of the help and information. I wasn’t sure about writing all of this, and I really appreciate your feedback and support. You guys rock!!!🥰🤟🏻
