FullaBella's Journal, 11 Dec 12

I've decided to TRY to stop burying the lead in my journals so the headline today is: I managed to open up my mind again and break another spoke on that cycle of insanity that has been driving my entire life to H*ll in a Handbasket.

For breakfast this morning I tried 1/4 cup serving of Bob's Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli instead of my same old 1/2 cup Quaker Old fashioned oats and loved it. I mixed frozen blueberries and Yogurt and it was great.

Oh, but here's my typical teaser. At the end of this journal entry I have yet another (of many) little confession about being a big idiot for nearly a half a century. Stay tuned.

When I first started this journey of a new life on 8/25/12 in effort to lower my cholesterol and blood sugar I dubbed it "Operation Oatmeal".

Shifting from (frozen breakfast crap) to a cooked cup of Quaker Old Fashioned Oats was a challenge. Even with cinnamon and two splendas it was five days before I stopped gagging at the thought of it or stuffing it down followed by a 24oz bottle of water.

When the 'I just can't do this' voice started echoing in my head the 'Yes you CAN' voice yelled back even louder so I began mixing all of the dry ingredients (adding in flax seed w/the oats, cinnamon & splenda) at night and placing in the microwave. No excuses ala 'ugh... this frozen crap thing is faster.'

By mixing it the night before I found myself 'thinking' about breakfast and more importantly the oatmeal. I began looking forward to it and imagining how great that cinnamon would taste in the morning.

One Spoke on the Cycle of Insanity Broken.

So that continued for a couple of months and even though I had read the label reflecting that a single 'serving' was actually half a cup instead of a whole cup of oats my reaction was (cue the voice) 'I am NOT about to cut my volume of intake, by golly, I need a lot of food for breakfast if I'm going to make it through the day on track!'

However, the 'Yes you Can' voice said 'Fine, don't cut quantity but WHATIF you replaced that second 'serving' with something containing fewer carbs and more protein like...an egg? Or Yogurt? Hmm... what say you give it a try? Besides, with the sugar in the yogurt you won't need to add the splenda either.'

And I did, and I liked it. Another spoke gone.

Last week (a little over 100 days into Operation Oatmeal) at my doc visit I was commenting on the carbs in oatmeal period and she suggested 'steel cut oats' may be lower in carbs.

I looked it up on the interweb and within seconds that 'NoWay' voice started screeching, "Are you freaking kidding me? It's the SAME amount of calories and carbs for HALF the quantity of food. What...are you NUTS? Just how much do you plan to do to me?"

But fortunately the 'Yes, you CAN' voice in my head spoke up again and said 'Hey, it may be less food to shovel in your mouth but the research indicates it has been processed less, has more texture and may taste better. What have you got to lose?"

So this weekend I looked for the steel cut oats but the grocer did not have any. They did have the Muesli and that looked fairly interesting with the raisins and nuts mixed in with the grains.

It too considers 1/4 cup a single serving but before the negative voice started whining my 'Yes, you CAN' voice said 'Hey! Try the single serving with a cup of frozen blueberries and a whole serving of yogurt. You've been cutting that in half anyway with the other Oats. Try something new because AFTER ALL you KNOW you HAVE to continue to find GOOD FOOD you can eat for the REST of your life without GETTING BORED and any of the other traps you've set for yourself your whole life! Do something before your breakfast, the meal you consider the most important, becomes boring!'

Sometimes my 'Yes, you CAN' voice speaks in run on sentences and poor grammer. Most of the time. What the heck. It gets the job done even though I'm sure this battle of the voices was a little scary for that other lady on the cereal aisle with me that day as I stood there adding, removing, adding, removing and finally adding that Muesli to the cart and leaving it there with one very definitive SHOVE as if I were trying to shove the "NoWAY" gal out of my path.

And once again, that "Yes, you CAN" voice was right. I loved it. I did not feel deprived. I think I over cooked it in the microwave because it was actually a little crunchy but I'll confess to me it was like eating 'brickle' or some other sweet crunchy candy-nut like thing. With the yogurt and berries I had MORE than enough food and was very satisfied. I still am.

Another spoke broken. My Cycle of Insanity has over 50 years of spokes firmly lodged in it so it will be quite a journey to break them all and walk through this to a brand new me but right now, What a trip!

So here's my confession of idiocy. I don't know about you but for me, there are some things I learned early in life and NEVER challenged them at all. On reflection of my poor upbringing I've decided to challenge everything now. The journal above, as with most of them, are expressions of doing THAT very thing.

Nonetheless, as a CHILD I witnessed OATMEAL COOKED in the following manner: Pour Oats into a pan. Add water until it covers the oats about 1/8 inch. Cook until it achieves a gravel like consistency. Shovel it down. And throughout my life, despite having shifted to microwave, it was still the same ratio and consistency.

MH had started eating oatmeal instead of eggs shortly before I initiated my Operation Oatmeal. But no matter WHAT I did or HOW much WATER I added it was 'too thick, too thin, tasted raw.' He doesn't like Old Fashioned Oats; he prefers the 'Quick Oats' and I just could NOT figure out how to get past breakfast without him being disappointed and complaining. AFTER all, I was making MY Old Fashioned Oats the same way and they were FINE.

Or so I thought. When I finally decided short of throwing in the towel on the morning Oatmeal fiasco, when I finally decided to look at the PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS I discovered I have been cooking oatmeal WRONG my WHOLE life.

I'm surprised MH hasn't divorced me before now!!

Wow - so for every cup of oats I'm supposed to add an equal amount of WATER? And even though the Big Label on Front reads 'Quick One Minute Oats' I'm supposed to allow it 2-3 minutes in the microwave???

WHAT????? How could I have been so STUPID SO LONG??

But I was. And you know what? I followed the flipping instructions that morning and MH has been one happy camper ever since. He's started leaving nearly half of his Oats in the bowl now but when I asked 'am I cooking you too much' and he said 'seems so but DONT CHANGE because I'm afraid you'll mess it up AGAIN.'

Oh, in case your wondering, no WAY I'm telling HIM this confession. I will just let him think I've discovered the Oatmeal Genie.

And you know what else?? That SINGLE serving (1/2 cup) of Old Fashioned Oats with an equal 1/2 cup of water, wowza, it IS enough!

So the point of this confession? Well, heck, we always say we learn from our mistakes. Maybe, just maybe, someone can learn from mine. If something seems amiss ~ rather than doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, break that cycle of insanity by trying something different like... reading the instructions!

As always, thank you for your patience and for reading my journal.

LOL....you have made me laugh for sure and given me an added inspiration with your "YES YOU CAN" voice!!! Love it!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Just to let you know my husband will NOT allow me to cook his oatmeal....hahahaha. He does not cook much of anything around here, but oatmeal and cream of wheat (gag) are the things that he definitely cooks himself. He let me cook oatmeal for him ONCE. The cream of wheat I am very thankful not to cook because just the smell of them make me want to gag.

Thank you Jaime! I so love this journal part of FS because it allows me to vent, voice and explore and the feedback is so encouraging. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I have not yet considered Creme of Wheat yet - I used to love it with all the butter and sugar as a child but will now have to explore it for the nutrition, proper cooking instructions (as a child ours always had LUMPS) and ways to make it taste good without the butter and sugar. Thank you again!

I used to love cream of wheat but my dad always stirred in chocolate syrup, lol. I think the key to making it without getting lumps is to slowly add the grains as you stir the boiling water and then keep stirring it often until it finishes. I never tried making it in the microwave.

P.S. I love your Oatmeal Chronicles. Something similar happened to me the other day. I was helping my mom load the dishwasher at her house and she corrected me when I put the steak knives in blade-down. I was shocked and confused because I only ever did it that way because she taught me to do it that way, lol. How dare she change the rules on me so late in life. ;)

LOL Erin - yep, we old folks learn new things now and then so you young whippersnappers need to pay attention. I remember being in my 30's when someone taught me how to dye coconut (I thought our supermarket just sucked because all they carried was plain old white) and how to turn the bottom layer of a double layer cake upside down to get that nice flat connection (instead of slicing off the bubble as I'd been doing.) The simplest little things ~~ how we take them for granted! So I researched Creme of Wheat and it only get's a B- as a food compared to the A for the Muesli and the A- for the Oats. While that doesn't knock it off my grocery list just yet it will be a little lower on the list for a couple of weeks. Thanks again :-)

gosh Bella, if you don't write for a living you should. Reading your journal is now part of my days entertainment. :D I switched from oatmeal to oat bran a few months ago. It is lower in carbs than oatmeal and high fiber. Use 1/3 cup oat bran to 1 cup of liquid -I use soymilk- and microwave three minutes. Use a big bowl so it doesn't boil over! Then I stir in blueberries & stevia, chopped apple, raisins, cinnamon & diet maple syrup, or a Tbsp of chocolate peanut butter. I LOVE my breakfast and my cholesterol and blood sugar are great! Bob's Red Mill makes my oat bran. Hope you can find it. :)

btw, you have to plan ahead with steel cut oats. Either soak it in liquid overnight or cook it on the stove for at least 30 minutes. It is healthy and has a good flavor but I don't find it worth the extra effort personally.

Awww Teska thank you! I just love that people read my journals and comment. To read that they are enjoyed gives me such a boost. I am definitely going to look for the oat bran - your description has me drooling. And yeah I'd read that about the steel cut oats (taking longer to cook and wondering if they'd be worth it) - may still try it if I find them. I saw the most awesome healthy egg quiche type dish I'm looking forward to trying on a Sunday.

mmm quiche. By all means, please share. :)

I'm hooked on steel cut oats, but lucky to have single serving unsweetened frozen portions (2 to a package) available at Whole Foods in my town. Before that, I'd make it in the crock pot & make my own single serving portions. I thought that steel cut were healthier, but I'm too hooked now to switch! I can so relate, Bella, to eating the same foods over & over, as I am so guilty of that too. Not sure if it's because of the comfort in a routine, or too time or energy consuming to come up with a new plan. But, once again, my FS friend, you've given me something else to think about!

Going to try that yes you can thing..just hope I listen...:O)

Thank you Ruth - I find a certain comfort in routine but find that quickly turns to boredom and then I'm on trouble. Fortunately I have the time right now to try new things and making a 'production' of my meals so that I acknowledge them more. BHA - you know you can - you've the stats and photo to prove it.

Hahahahaha,.... thank you for making my day! This was a FUN read. I appreciate it. I loved reading about your mental battles over things. Even little things. I think we all do that. I'm gonna call that "Yes you can" voice the Obama voice. ;)

Bella I love your journals!!! It is almost like you are the voice in my head :) Continue and enjoy your journey of discovery :)

Kingkeld thank you. While I wasn't even (ever) thinking political pundents as I composed that I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Triaby thank you too. I am so flattered people endure my journals - reading they like them is great. I cant promise they'll all be good ... right now the only sound in my head is a test pattern.

Lmao brilliant! !!
12 Dec 12 by member: triaby
I tried the "yes you can" voice and it worked like a charm, thanks!

Thank you Erin & Triaby ~ you may not want to read my journal today then because the test pattern cleared once the coffee kicked in and I realized what I was trying to block out. The YYC gal let ME down. Oh well, another day :-)

I decided to back up and read some of your journals I've missed since I enjoy your writing so much and SO relate to you! As for oatmeal, I like old fashion (cooked according to package directions, lol) with a tablespoon of fresh ground almond butter mixed in, then a little milk or unsweetened almond milk. I also mix 1/4 cup dry oats in with ground turkey breast, finely grated zucchini, seasoning, and some eggbeaters. Mix it all up, let it sit a while, then cook patties of it on a grill pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Yummy, filling lunch or dinner. Check out the Bob's Red Mill website; you can order steel cut oats if you can't find them & really want to try them. I live close to the original Bob's Red Mill; they have a cafe with great food, sell great baked goods, and every kind of flour, grain, legumes, baking mixes, cereals, etc that you could imagine. I'm like a kid in a candy store there, since I love to bake. They even have a bulk section so I can get a small amount of something I just want to try a little of. I bought some hazelnut flour there last visit that I plan on using in some cookies, wrapping hazelnut dough around dried sweet cherries stuffed with a chocolate chip. I'll also make hazelnut whole wheat bread. Oh, I love muesli! First time I tried it was at a restaurant where they had kind of soaked it in nonfat plain yogurt and served it with fresh fruit. I thought it was weird (I grew up putting sugar on my Life cereal), but I loved it. I gotta stop rambling in your journals, lol.

Ckat - I bet if we were in person we'd finish each other's sentences, LOL. You know, when I wrote that 'how I screwed up something as simple as Oatmeal' I made a mistake, it's DOUBLE water to the oats... the next morning when my 'printed words' were firmly ingrained in my steel trap mind (slammed shut all the time) with the 'equal parts' I totally screwed up MH's oatmeal and heard the 'geez... how did you screw this up Nowwww' lament. I revisited the instructions and 'duhhhhhhhh' became my mental test pattern for the next three minutes it took to prepare for him another serving CORRECTLY. While I lamented in our local grocer, outloud, "geez... I so HATE living in the STICKS' the other day ((( then quickly admonished myself for being soooooo ungrateful that I do HAVE a local grocer and food! ))) simply because they did NOT have steel cut oats there either I did note a whole assortment of the Bob's delicious goodies and yes, I am such a regular shopper at Amazon they send me a 'Get Well' card if I go more than a week without ordering something. So I know I have resources, I just comment because I live vicariously through one of my other dear buddies here who has local access to my two favorite stores: Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Thank you so much for the 'how to use the old fashioned oats' idea. Another buddy here uses it in meatloaf. These will help me as I presently have Five of the HUGE CANISTERS of the old fashioned oats I'd bought with my 'ONLY one breakfast and no enjoying IT' method to weight loss when I first started this. I need to utilize those before I go wild exploring the wonderful world of .... and you thought you rambled. Ramble away.
