1. Calories determine weight loss gain. Prioritize protein and resistance training to ensure minimal lean mass loss.

2. Claiming that you need less calories than someone of the same size given the same activity is claiming that your body is more efficient than others. Most would say they burn less because they are unhealthy but a more efficient body suggests superior health.

3. Claiming that certain foods cause slower fat loss given the same amount of calories is claiming that those foods are a superior source of energy.

Keeping fat/muscle on our bones is easy because of how readily available food is in this day and age. Most of us don't live in a 3rd world country where people may be starving to death so we think of so called fattening foods as bad and human body energy efficiency as bad when the opposite is true for those populations. Think about it for a minute. If you believe I'm wrong, please explain.

In third world countries they eat leaner - fish, rice, spices, fresh and local fruits and vegetables. Some places the population relies very heavily on veggies and rice for every meal. And they do way more walking and manual labor, so they get daily exercise. You just don't hear about them eating pizza or a pound cake baked with a stick of butter for a meal.

Hi Diablo. Looking at #2. If I look at the official math on calories in calories out based on Apple Watch reported activity and FS food tracking I should have lost about 50 pounds last month instead of 10. I've got a deficit of over 2000 calories every day. So why would that be the case unless the estimated calories burned is off because I'm not burning as fast as they expect at apple--or I guess as fast as the typical person?

Overestimation of calorie output, underestimation of calorie input, added lean mass, and metabolic adaptations due to way too high of a deficit are some possible reasons. Have you taken measurements? Gotten stronger? Use a food scale and count every bite?

Kit and Chris, I know the reasons why people are not overweight in third world countries, it doesn't have anything to do with what I'm saying. I'm saying that given the same calorie load, if certain foods cause slower tissue loss, it is the superior energy source. If someone struggles to lose weight given the same activity as another of the same height, weight, and gender they have a more efficient body. The first is inaccurate, the second is a common excuse.

Also Tash, how are you figuring 50 pounds? There are 3500 calories in a pound of muscle. 2k average would be 17.71 pounds. Plus you're likely adding muscle which takes a lot less calories to assimilate.

I disagree with # 2 -- too many scientific studies and double blind tests prove each and every one of us utilize, burn and store calories and nutrients differently. But of course, you have the right to believe as you feel.

The range is much smaller than people want to believe however. But yes, that one isn't 100% accurate. 90% maybe. Some people claim to eat 900 calories without losing fat and weigh 300 plus pounds. I don't buy it. Even while in a coma a 300 pound person needs much more energy to maintain that weight.
