Metabolism Damage

Once upon a time, when I was 14 years old, i was 180+lbs and wearing a size 18 in ladies pants.
I had experienced some psychological abuse that caused me to feel guilty about how much I ate.

At age 16, I reduced my calories to 1200 a day and began to lose weight.

After a while, I plateaued and became obsessed with breaking the plateau.

I began to walk for hours every day and work out with weights to increase my metabolism. That kickstarted my weight loss and broke my plateau.

I hit another plateau and reduced my caloric intake even more.

This cycle repeated every 8 pounds, while I was increasing my exercise, lowering my caloric content more I finally hit my weight goal of 115lbs and fit nicely into a size 3 jeans within 4 months.

What I did not realize was that I did remarkable damage to my metabolism. I was just a kid and no support. I was suffering with 500 calories a day, forced to exercise like crazy to maintain my weight.

I became so stressed out that by my 18th birthday my immune system crashed. I caught a disease that disabled me for more than a year. I was forced to go to a nutritionist when I was examined by the doctors. This time my parents had to pay for it.

I regained some of the weight and went back up to 165lbs naturally. I did not begin to lose weight again until I was healthy enough.

I learned a lot about diet, nutrition, mind/body since then. I'm now 45 years old and a well-being consultant / coach that uses many psychological / neurological / NLP techniques to master my life.

Though, normally I am between 126lbs-138lbs normally and happy at this weight, I've recently gained a little weight during some stressful times in my life and over the summer when I'm less active.

This run around with weight loss this time is going to be very different for me. I'm tired of yo-yo'ing and I'm am fixing the problem by getting to the root of the issue. I do not believe in using any form of substance, or product to enhance my experience.

I'm addressing my mental and physical needs, working thru psychological challenges on my own, using my own neuro-techniques that have proven successful over the years.

I'm very concerned, when I see others on fatsecret who are plateauing and recording caloric intakes that are extraordinarily lower and lower each month, that they could be making the same mistakes I made as a kid. This can be a mental place of desperation, frustration and helplessness to get to the goal without realizing the potential of bodily damage that can be done from over exercising, causing injury, psychological distress, metabolic disorder, etc.

Keep in mind, there is always a cause for our plateau, 10 out of 10 times, it's an emotional trigger. We can turn to self-destructive behaviors when confronted with stress, that can lead us into dangerous habits that can impact our well-being.

Psychology and Neuroscience has taught us that our reality is based on our own perception. If this is true, that takes away from blaming any disease, or outside / environmental influence, pharmaceuticals, illness, resistance that we may encounter.

I have worked in very large psychological / medical interdisciplinary teams throughout my career. When I start talking about mind / body well-being to doctors, psychological professionals, etc. I get smiles and head nods. We have remarkable conversations about how much control we actually have over our bodies, just within the power of our mind.

Perception is everything!

I hope you have enjoyed this entry. If you have questions or would like to talk about your situations, feel welcome to connect with me privately and we can get on the phone.

I leave this information to you with much love.

Many years ago, I consulted with my primary care physician about weight loss. After some math, she recommended that I eat 800 calories a day to lose weight. I can eat anything I want. I do not have to watch my carbs or proteins. This is what best matches my lifestyle. I've lost weight using this method in the past. I found it to be easier on me, less stressful. I do find myself hungry more often, which is a good thing. I can now graze throughout the day on healthy food. When you eat more often, it will raise your metabolism too. So it's a win/win situation. I used to panic that 800 calories was not enough and that I was always hungry, however I was combining my low calorie diet with low carb and that was triggering more anxiety than anything. It was causing a cortisol response from being hungry and not being able to get in enough food during the day, because of all the calories in all the high protein foods. As a result my metabolism slowed down and left me feeling hopeless with my effort. I'm doing things slightly differently now and feeling more confident without a feeling of anxiety if I get hungry.
