Hi! I'm Janet, I'm 61, married, with 3 adult children ranging from 26 to 35. About six years ago I weighed 311 pounds, and couldn't tie my own shoes. I had gastric bypass surgery in March of 2006. My goal was to lose 150 pounds or be a size 10, whichever came first. While some people leave the hospital with a thirty to forty pound weight loss, that was not my experience. In my first month post surgery, following my doctor's instructions to the letter, I think I lost all of 7 pounds. Thereafter, I lost a steady 10 to 12 pounds a month. I reached 150, and just kept on going. I've maintained a weight of 110 to 112 for over six years. Don't get the idea that any of this has been easy. It is still a daily struggle to eat well and resist temptation. Snickers bars still call my name! In August of 2012, I had surgery to remove excess skin. Due to my bypass related malnutrition, I had great difficulty healing. Three planned surgeries turned into 13, and an unbelievable number of in office procedures, in attempts to keep my surgical incisions closed. I am just now getting back into exercise. While I have managed to maintain my weight, my body composition has changed drastically. Less muscle mass means more body fat, and a noticeable difference in how my clothes fit. That has got to change, because I don't ever want to buy a whole new wardrobe in a whole new size again. That means regular exercise, both cardio and weight bearing, and a 1200 calorie, high protein diet. So far, I'm struggling, but I hope being part of this community will help.
