FarmerJeannine's Journal, 10 Apr 18

Hello, I hope everyone is well today!

Today should be better for me - those of you who know about my cute, geriatric dog, Pippin, will be relieved to know that he's much better today - he had a bad reaction to his heartworm medication, and wouldn't eat anything... not a good situation for an extremely underweight, diabetic, elderly dog! Yesterday was pretty stressful... He seemed a lot better last night and actually ate his dinner, so I think it's finally out of his system. Considering he's over 15 years old now and lives in the house (and since he's blind, he never goes outdoors without his seeing-eye-human), my hubby and I will ask the vet if we can skip the medication in the future. A happy fur baby makes for a happy mom! :D

After only two days, I am finally used to no added sweetener in my coffee!!! After reading some advice posted by Phil (and looking up something that Deadpool had described as a great example of sugar free evil, "sugar free haribo gummy bears" - I had to look them up because I'd never heard of them, but there are a lot of disgustingly hilarious stories about them on the 'net), I decided to quit putting fake sugar in my coffee. I thought it would taste gross, but this is my second day of nothing but unsweetened almond milk in my coffee, and I have to admit that it tastes just fine... so thank you, Phil and Deadpool!

That's it for today - spring is creeping in!!

Hi, Jeannine I'm happy that Pippin is doing much better, and his seeing-eye humans also. Before I responded to you, I went looking for information about the gummy bears. I found a page of Amazon reviews published on the Business Insider website. I don't remember when I last laughed this hard! Even now writing to you, I involuntarily start giggling when I want to be serious & I have a hard time stopping myself from roaring in laughter. You know I tried finding Phil because there were comments I intended to go back & read & I haven't been able to find him. I entered "Phil" to search the list of FS members and only one name came back, but not the same Phil. I just now figured it out: the only members I am able to search for are on the Canadian version of FS. In fact that one member named Phil that came up had a French last name. I'm glad you reported here what Phil had to say that particular time. Spring isn't creeping in here yet. Not even sure that the maple syrup season is started, it's been so cold in Ontario & Quebec. Still have to prevent myself from chuckling... Sorry!

It was definitely the funniest thing I'd read in a while as well... :) Glad to pass on the giggles...

I know, bitter coffee not so delicious but you get used to drinking it, well I think that bitter coffee is better than headaches

I'm so glad Pippin is better. Btw, the sweeteners I use recommended by Trim Healthy Mama are naturally made; i.e. not from chemicals but rather roots, plant leaves, etc. This would include stevia, gentle sweet, truvia (in the plastic canister, not the bag), etc. For the most part I have gotten used to no sweeteners in my coffee, (though still use the ones named now and then) but instead enjoy a little bullet coffee with MCT powder and also a scoop of integral collagen.

Thanks for the recommendation, Ladonna - I have checked out stevia, and think it's okay in baking, but to me it seems to have a mildly bitter aftertaste which coffee doesn't need. :) I've read about bullet coffee, and both the butter and coconut oil are substances that I need to limit as severely as possible because of my cholesterol levels... I'm content with my coffee with unsweetened almond milk every morning. Every Saturday, I make myself a frappe as a treat - espresso powder and a little bit of cold water and a teaspoon of real sugar (only 15 calories!) mixed with an immersion blended for a minute or two until foamy, then top off with unsweetened almond milk and cold water... very yummy, but espresso powder is too dear for every day (I need to get it mail order!). Anyway, have a good day!

"Seeing-eye human" - love it! Glad the little guy is doing better!

I do not drink coffee, and I'm glad that you now appreciate your coffee black, Jeannine, but I wonder whether you tried the liquid form of stevia. I have tons of bulk powdered stevia I bought years ago, and I hardly ever use it, but I find the stevia in alcohol better-tasting. I read that Now Better Stevia had cornered the market, but I don't know whether that is just for Canada. I ordered some (plain) recently & found out that this company has created a whole range of flavours of stevia: dark chocolate, cinnamon, pomegranate blueberry, hazelnut, lemon twist, French vanilla, etc. etc. etc. I find it easier to control the sweetness with the liquid form and thereby avoid the bitter after-taste. Jeannine, your description of an espresso frappe has me wanting to try one, even though I am not a coffee drinker. ;-) My favourite drink with stevia I call my lemonade. It is just lemon juice, stevia drops in water and ice. I remember coming back home in the middle of the night after being with my mother at the ER and that 'lemonade' is the only thing I craved. It IS processed food, diet junk-food, a food-like substance, even though stevia is a plant, my brother grew some in his garden & I still have some (dried leaves) in my cupboard.

Forgot to mention, there is a form of liquid (alcohol-free) stevia in glycerin -- I find that one revolting, but I think I saw a keto author recommending it in cooking (or was it baking?).

I wrote 'etc.' 3 times, a reference to a movie from my youth (maybe known only to myself?), but re-reading it, it seems that the FS system has cut one out?! Puzzling. It makes me feel as if Big Brother is proof-reading my words....

Now the 3rd 'etc.' is back in my post. I'm started to feel paranoid or something.

Jeannine, I put espresso powder on my shopping list -- seems I am haunted by your description of your frappe, I want to make it (with stevia instead of sugar, I'm afraid). Did you have it yesterday, Saturday?
