Started the day with a hike. I am pretty proud of that. I was actually quite reluctant to get going. Ever since the dog tangled with the rattlesnake, I have lost confidence for hiking alone with the dog. I have gotten back on the trail with friends, but that takes more organization. I have really been missing just heading out with Bosco when the spirit moves me.

I did a familiar trail. The beginning is steep, what my friend calls Heart Attack Hill, but I survived, admittedly with some huffing and puffing! The rest of the hike was pleasant. I was on high alert for snakes and kind of jumpy when there was rustling in the brush. Birds and lizards really make more noise than they should in the dry grass! I tried to reassure myself with the fact that if it was a mountain lion, I would not hear it! :) I did see a quail, one of the cutest members of the bird world, and that always makes me smile.

Having accomplished that, I am feeling good and ready to take on the day.

If I lived where you lived I'd hike too...and really miss the opportunity. Wow.

If you're worried about snakes keep a walking stick or hiking stick handy with you when you walk and make sure you carry a small snake bite kit and know how to use it. 🤷🏻‍♀️Your best defence is always to be prepared. A good stick is always a nice thing to have walking in the woods for multiple reasons and speaking as a Pacific Northwesterner who lived on the edge of the Pacific Crest Trail, too many people forget simple things when they are just going for a "short walk." Like 1. Telling anybody where they are going 2. Staying hydrated 3. Any first aid supplies 4. A swiss army knife 5. Their cell phone 6. If they're in the PNW a large plastic garbage bag or space blanket in their first aid kit. 7. A hat, and layers. I know I sound like a mom and a Scout leader, and that's cause I was both! 🤷🏻‍♀️I just don't like people taking risks they don't need to. A small day pack with their water bottle and a walking stick can make their hikes so much safer. And I think worrying is part of the mom gene. 🙇🏻‍♀️

smprowett--I did actually have everything with me except the stick. I had always joked with my hiking buddy that my snake bite kit was like bringing an umbrella to keep the rain away. (Sadly, when my dog was bitten, I couldn't see where the wound was until well after it happened, so my snake bit kit didn't save the day.)

You are the kind of hiker we liked! You knew the routine! LOL My son was a wilderness trained scout so would go running with his Swiss army knife, his smartphone and his camel bag. Cuz he was all about... if I'm hurt anywhere in that 12 miles mom, unless it's drug runners and they hide the body, my swiss army knife and the forest with a hoodie is enough to see me through. 🤦🏻‍♀️ What I wouldn't give to be 17 and immortal! 🙋🏻
