Spent entire day till 8 pm yesterday in hospital with my SIL. She is having auditory hallucinations. She does have a UTI but CT scan was clean for tumor or evidence of stroke and labs are clean. She’s almost 55 with a past that has been full of struggles. Had no food but some steamed broccoli in hospital cafeteria. Nearly zero healthy options in a hospital which seems bizarre to me. But then came home and ate Mac and cheese. First time in a couple years and it was very tasty and very unhealthy. Followed by m&m’s. Annoying today that i rewarded my difficult day with food like that. Well, back to hospital today. Mental illness is very taxing on both the patient and the family.

Yikes!! That is horrible. You must be so worried. We have mental illness in our families. My cousin was diagnosed as a sociopath/antisocial personality disorder. Hubby's brother is a paranoid schizophrenic. Your response was understandable, although regrettable. Be as kind to yourself as you are to your SIL.

Oh yoh. We have stuff in our family too. So awful to observe and you feel helpless. Praying she gets what she needs physically and spiritually. And I know she has one of the best by her side. You!! 🙏🏻💖🙏🏻

that is terrifying! it must be difficult for her to deal with that!! i wish her the best! my friend in high school developed schizophrenia in his senior year. it started with auditory hallucinations then visuals. i remember we were playing guitar, and hes like "do you see the letters??" he saw the letters of the notes he was playing floating in his living room. i was already studying psychology and recommended to him and his father to have that looked into.

Wifey, today she was much more clearheaded. Sounds like a case of over prescribed multiple meds perhaps not taken as prescribed. Pretty scary. Relieving tho today. Discharging tomorrow as long as she stays lucid.

Dazey, we have a friend whose 20 something son was recently diagnosed with adult onset schizophrenia. He was hearing and seeing violent things. Fortunate he got diagnosed earlier in life than later (your friend). My SIL doesnt really remember a lot she thinks what she does remember is kind of like a dream. Fortunately for her.

I'm so sorry to hear this!. That is so scary! Was she mixing prescriptions on purpose or was it accidental? I feel for you guys! Its getting late so I'll reach out tomorrow..🩷🩷

Probably a little of both Diana. Hard to say. Good news is she was tested and no street drugs in her system. Medical community gives out serious meds so easily and she is on so many that it’s quite possible it was accidental. Was very scary tho. Of course i come from a place that finds prescriptions abhorrent unless there is literally no other way. Thanks for checking sis.

YOH: wow! i agree with you about prescriptions abhorrent unless no other route can be taken!! I didnt realize overuse of scripts' can create this scenario!!! Hope she continues to improve!

It's scary when it is so extreme. Have you considered a locking pill box with an alarm? It was a God send for my Mom. Dementia and some mental health issues is an ugly combo, but that really helped all of us.

I'm so sorry. Hospitals are the worst places on Earth. Prescriptions can cause these symptoms and it is such a shame. The medical community gets barely 2 hours of education in the creation of a healthy patient, for the long-term. This is a passion of mine, because of the impact it has had within my family. You may find this of interest, I recently came across a widely well-respected and credentialed practicing physician, whose focus is on mental health and healing the brain. He practices at McLean Physicians Hospital, Belmont, MA. He has written a book, which I just bought, after hearing him speak, titled, "Brain Energy". His name is Dr. Christopher Palmer. I heard him speak at the Low Carb Down Under conference on their YouTube channel. That led me to a whole host of medical specialists, researchers, scientists, etc..who are experts in this field. It is quite exciting what they have been able to discover, prove, and succeed in helping patients recover from a variety of "incurable diseases". For Dr. Palmer, in particular, this seems to be a passion project. I'm grateful for doctors like him. I hope you consider looking him up and listening, it may save your SIL's life. Take care.

This would be a good time for the DR./Hospitalist to go over ALL her meds and be sure she is getting what she needs. Too often, esp. with multiple Dr's new medications get ordered without stopping others and patient ends up in trouble down the road. We would often have the hospital pharmacist come to the floor and go over the chart to make suggestions. A good thing to do is be sure you are well nourished when going into this type of stressful atmosphere, do not go telling yourself you don't have time right now that you will grab something later. Hugs and pryers for your family. ❤️

On a lighter note, I also work in a hospital, and yes, the food is generally unhealthy. They do have some healthy options which are priced less, mainly salad bar, soup and cooked vegetables. I guess the demand for unhealthy foods is driving those higher prices. People really prefer that stuff. We all need to rewire our brains.

so sorry to hear that my prayers will be with you both.

🙏 After such a demanding day I hope you can find some time to rest and decompress. Rest helps stress and the drive for foods we use to feed it.

Oh gosh such a day! I am glad your SIL showed no signs of stroke or cancer! Does she get ATI's alot and has the doctor suggested AZO to help? It is odd that hospitals don't have better choices in the cafeteria for healthy eating. But it seems a lot of the medical field not all would rather push medicine. Sometimes it is hard to stay on the path of eating right but knowing you it was just a blip on the radar and you will be back to your normal eating!
