Public Service Announcement - Years ago in the early 90s it was the coldest it has ever been here, -22F. I was called out that night to do emergency dialysis and came home at 3 A.M. and discovered that our home had caught fire due to the wood stove not being installed correctly when the house was built. The fire had burned a hole all the way through the living room wall where you could look outside. The smoke alarm woke my hubby who is HOH and he got our pre-school son outside and put the fire out with our hose. It's a wonder the hose was left outside and that it didn't freeze up. It would have taken a long time for the fire department to arrive as far out as we live. He said he prayed a lot. I could have lost EVERYTHING that night so I am a huge fan of smoke alarms. Make sure yours works!!! By the way, the wood stove was not reinstalled. Not a fan of those.

Wow, how awful for your family! Such a close call, which just goes to show we just dont know from one hour to the next what may unfold. Scary. Nothing short of a miracle that the hose wasnt froze solid in those temps!

Miracle story. Our hoses freeze in warmer temps than that. That was definitely God’s mercy. Great story.

wifey9707, it was. My hubby doesn't hear that well when awake, let alone asleep.

That sounds so scary! Glad everyone was safe! I agree on the need to have working smoke alarms! We just replaced ours and hubby installed one in the dining room, next to kitchen. We have an older house with a wood burning fireplace. We use it everyday so need to safe!

We put our hose away & Hubby covers the outdoor spigots to prevent freezing. We do have fire extinguishers.

God is gracious. The best thing He did was get your husband to get your child out safely. Everything else can get rebuilt. I'm sorry for your loss.

Diana 1234, you are so right to be wary. Until that time we were just obeying the law and didn't really understand how important it might be.

SherryeB, we don't keep the hose connected and normally put it away but didn't this year. We have fire extinguishers too but it would have done no good in a fire due to a chimney not being built right. The fire was between the wall and siding.

ejeanmard, so right. We did rebuild the living room. Without the wood stove.
