How to Increase Your NEAT😎

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT, is the energy you use for your everyday activities (other than sleeping, eating, or sports-like exercise).[1] Factors that influence your NEAT include things such as walking to work, typing, or fidgeting. These types of non-exercise physical activities can increase your metabolism significantly.[2] Although sitting won’t increase your NEAT, doing activities while you sit can.[3] Increasing your NEAT may help you maintain or lose weight.[4] It may also minimize your risk for developing diabetes and circulatory diseases.[5] You can increase your NEAT by doing different types of activities while standing or using the time you’re seated to get in some type of movement.

I've realized recently that I'm a champion fidgeter. If I stand and talk to someone, I invariably start rocking on my feet. Can't pay attention on a Zoom call unless I'm tossing something hand to hand. Think it's because I'm a restless person stuck in a desk job. Can't wait to retire! 😂

This is great Crystal! We did excercise bingo at work the other day and it was a lot of fun. There are a lot of excercises you can do at your desk from your chair that are good for us chair sitters!! We all need to move even at office jobs.

I sew and draw most days so my NEAT is non existent. Therefore I found once I started not counting these calories for my daily calorie expenditure. I really started to lose weight and get into a true calorie deficit. On the flip side if you start to build muscle you are going to need to slight increase you calories or if you train for a sport and need to sprint or do a lot of high intensity you will need to increase the calorie intake . For these seasonal changes I just supplement with protein bars and maybe an extra scoop or 1/2 scoop of protein powder. I am not an elite athlete in any means but I have found increasing from the minimal 30 minutes 3-5 times a week and not assuming neat has resulted in a 45+ lb weight loss and maintenance over the last 10 years. Been at my set weight of 120-125 for over 8+ years and found the muscle tone not the scale really helps me to enjoy clothes fitting properly and a little forgiveness come football and holiday season in regard to food. Not at my ideal or best currently but love the habits that I have held onto and the peace of mind I get on why did I starve myself all those years from fat kid 5th grade to 30 year old first time mom. Different cardio intervals for the different body weights and compositions has helped me understand why eating like a 110 lb active person at 180 lbs and doing no exercise is counter productive. I love activity now and the heat and outdoors where stuck in an office I never looked in the mirror for like 5 years after my daughter. To those women out their I say we do what we need to do for our jobs and family but it catches up to you if you ignore the health factor or nutrients you are missing by eating the pastry or bowl of sugary cereal and latte and then eat fast food like I did for lunch with a super sized sweet tea or cola. I thank god for my wake up call and for the people that have encouraged me on my health journey to build a life I respect and appreciate. Lots of other areas of my life that I can’t control but 2 hours of my day I know I am putting in the work that will keep me going in the right direction.
