wholefoodnut's Journal, 12 Mar 15

Exercise is pretty much blown for the week. Back from the docs, armed with drugs, and orders to rest; beginning of sinus, ear infection and bronchitis.

Was in bed by 5:00 last night and have slept most of the day. So it's lots of liquids and rest for me for a few days. Plan on not going to work tomorrow, they can live without me.

Made some bone broth this morning, it's been simmering most of the day, no work to make it. Open the bones that I had in the freezer, dump them and a quartered onion, a couple carrots broken in pieces and a few stalks of celery cut in big pieces, a bit of salt in a big pot add water put on stove.

That's not the kind of trifecta you want. Get well soon.

Look at you, feeling ill and taking Friday off from work, but you have time to tell us how to make bone broth. Thank you! Praying you get well very soon!

Feeling a bit better this morning the rotating knife in my sinuses has eased so now my eyes are working better. Reading the computer was impossible yesterday. So the drugs are starting to work. I'm planning on following doc's orders and rest, not tackle projects ;)).Bone broth is easy Bone broth is easy, I learned this from this site (Hippogrammy I'm pretty sure). A couple pounds of bones, they do not need meat, an onion quartered, a couple carrots scrubbed and broken into pieces, a couple stalks of celery scrubbed and in 3-4 in lengths, a bit of salt and a couple bay leaves if you want. Toss it in a big pot, fill with water and simmer for several hours. Add water here and there as the water will evaporate. When it smells and tastes yummy strain and refrigerate. The fat will rise to the top so you can skim it off. Use as you wish either plain or use for stock in recipes. I've been using these big nice marrow bones that the corner store sells as dog bones for cheap. I also get the dog some smaller ones, though they would work well for the broth as well.

Thanks for your get well wishes everyone. The drugs and extra rest will kick in and all will be well again. Definitely not the first go round with bronchitis and sinus.

WFN: glad you have some ease in the sinuses! I know it's hard for you to sit still especially when there's work to do .. but I also know you want to get better so you will listen to the doctor. Take care of yourself, continue meds and drink that bone broth! You will be good again .. and soon.

Glad you are starting to feel better! I have heard bone broth is the new (old) elixir! I also am going to try to make a batch.

Hey WFN, I just read this and didn't realize you were so ill. I noticed you have been scarce and now I know why. Good for you for getting that broth made and taking your meds. REST, drink fluids and more rest. You really got hit hard this time. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh ... I got my book yesterday finally. OMG that thing is huge! You weren't kidding. This "How To Cook Everything" has 2000 recipes. Lordy me. I should get this book for all my kids. It is simply amazing! Thanks for telling me about it.

Mom, I don't have that one yet, but will, have checked it out of the library. I like the fact he gives you methods of cooking with lots of options. Kinda fits my "Chopped" way of cooking: Look at what I have some days and come up with something. I tend to buy things off my list and plan for the week because they look good or interesting then have to find something to do with them. Not as sick this time as it sounds, I went in to her quickly before it turned really bad which it can in a matter of hours. I get bronchitis and pneumonia really easily, I've had the shots but still get the pneumonia though not as often. We have learned that for me she has to be aggressive on the meds and I have to get in quickly and have to do my best to listen when she says rest. Especially after last years 3 bouts in 6 weeks, 2 were pneumonia one both lungs were 3/4 full. My doc has orders on my chart that if I call with a respiratory issue to get me in the same day, she stayed late for me last year to squeeze me in, when it all hit at work one day. Luckily it's going into a weekend and I don't have to work tomorrow, we cannot take 3 sick days in a row without filing for FMLA status, which my doc will do if I need it.

You must be one helluva chef if you can compare your cooking to "chopped". I LOVE THAT SHOW! I don't know what half the stuff is they cook with and really impressed that the chefs on the show do. One show they did was on little grade school kids and they knew more about cooking and using the big restaurant equipment than I ever thought about. Glad you are listening to the doctor's orders. I am wondering if all of that stuff being pulled out of your attic had anything to do with you getting so ill this time? Having new insulation should help, in fact. Hugs!

Laughing, I just feel like I'm on chopped because I pull out stuff set it on my counter or table and wonder what the heck? I need to use this before it spoils. I love chopped as it has so many creative ideas and learn about ingredients I see in ethnic stores with no clue what they are. Inspires me to be brave and try new things. Yeah kids and restaurant equipment are fun. My kids would get to cook on some when they were little when we closed on Sundays.

I just learned to chop up my veggies and freeze them before they go bad. It's common sense to do that but I had to read about it someplace before the light bulb went on. Ha Ha! I had odds and ends to freeze that were leftover from my D-Burn diet episode. One leek, two fennel bulbs and two huge bunches of baby asparagus. I don't know why I bought so much of that.
