Talkin bout 'carbs' today...

First of all, I'm not a nutritionist or dietitian...just a curious and often confused FS member🤔 Folks are following a myriad of different diet regimens, plans & WOE (ways of eating, for the newbies😉). The lingo and the abbreviations, etc can be daunting! I tend to follow USDA guidelines for diabetics (as my husband is type2) and it seems balanced and do-able for our family.

But we hear (and read) such dramatically different things about carbs, right??!! I'm posting just a few things on the subject today. I believe there is a place for clean, whole food carbs in my WOE to round out my family's nutritional needs. I don't advocate for any certain diet plan for ANYONE but myself, but I DO think that information is power and I'm always on the lookout for useful information👀💪😊

Put me on the totally for good carbs...for myself, at least. I'm talking whole, unprocessed foods. I'm not going to argue with someone who finds low carb works for them unless they start telling ME what I should be eating when I haven't asked for advice. One of the most important aspects of a diet is whether you can sustain it. I'd be miserable on a low carb diet because I'd miss my grains and potatoes, and I really don't care for meat all that much. Other people might not be able to sustain a diet without meat. My only wish is health for others, regardless of what path they're on 😊

Great minds run in the same channel, CrystalJo. 😁 Plus, I've been mindful to follow people on FS who I think have a balanced perspective, more in line with my philosophy 🤗

Hi CrystalJo. Have you heard of Walter Kempner, MD? You might be interested in reading about his work if you have time. It's not really quite as simple as "good unprocessed carbs" and "bad processed carbs" and even today, there's a significant portion of people who care about their health who think fruit should not be eaten and is bad for you.

I've heard that argument about fruit-- is it the carbs? Plenty of people who think fruit is good for you as well. For a differing opinion, there's Nutritionfacts.org and the Nutrition Made Simple channel on YouTube. Lots of potassium and fiber in fruits, and the gut microbiome likes them. I think it's good to get some different perspectives -- I've seen both sides on the carb argument

Writingwyo, the argument is about fructose, but it's wrong because people forget the dose makes the poison. Btw, not trying to argue, just saying processed carbs have been used in therapeutic diets historically.

Fruit is an important daily part of my diet and I wouldn't go without it.

Yes, I agree, processed carbs have their place in certain circumstances. I have a niece with Crohn's, and a slice of whole wheat bread would bring misery for her, but she can eat white flour sourdough. So do processed foods and even fast foods. I avoid them,, but I have the luxury of cooking without holding down a second job or corralling kids. A lot of different WOEs out there, depending on circumstances and preferences

thanks Crystaljo for this information I just eat whatever I want in moderation, while I'm still able, because I've heard some people say things that they use to eat they can't have anymore for whatever reason. health, allergies, etc. so I thank God I can still eat whatever I choose.

@buenita...that is also a great outlook! Moderation & portion control are keys to our success, no matter whether it's carbs or whatever! Balance, right!? I try to eat as much of my food as possible as close to the way God put it on this earth as possible 😊 Simple, clean & varied 💙
