How to Buy Food: The Psychology of the Supermarket

Eight hours of sleep with one wide awake episode. I drank four cups of weak coffee. I'm sticking to my plan of getting up an hour later and using the bed only for sleeping.

Morning plank and ten minutes first thing in the morning on the Air Walk Trainer to burn off glycogen.

Wednesday was an up day on the Alternate-Day Diet (eat all I want) .

Did some more work with my new scale. Figured out how to use the memory recall feature. Body fat shows up as 10%. That didn't seem to be right. My readings on the handheld composition monitor are in the range of 25 to 30%.

I made an omelet with two eggs, can of Rotel chilies and tomatoes and protein powder blended in the Ninja Prep Pro and using the Cuisinart Sandwich Maker. It was a mess: burned, stuck to the griddle, and leaked over the side. I will stick to waffles, sandwiches and fruit pies in the future.

I used the Stress-less can opener I ordered from Woot because of my sarcopenia. It was easier to use and it cuts the can open with no sharp edges on the lid.

Cardio: one hour on the Air Walk Trainer yesterday - early so I wouldn't be doing cardio while watching "Mysteries of Laura" - plus five minutes every hour to offset the effects of sitting. Steps: 791. My new daily average to surpass is 732. My record on the Striiv Smart Pedometer is 1,781.

Time spent on organizing the kitchen to date: four hours, 15 minutes.

How are your knees doing with the weight-loss? That's also one of the reasons I am also choosing to loose weight.

Anything that takes weight and stress off the joints is to the good. My knees never bothered me - knock on wood. My plantar fasciitis was the problem. That has improved. Have you seen any improvement in your knees?

Well, main problem was my sciatica and I have definitely noticed a difference there. I used to get the painful shooting pains in my lower back that would cause my left leg to become weak. I was overweight then, I still want to lose more, but I guess I am now in the healthy range. I do have issues with my knees, but it was from running on concrete and being heavy. I just am more cautious when I do high-impact exercises.

Do you take Glucosamine? I try to take it for my joints. Someone on here recommended it to me when I mentioned problems with my knees.

Is there any place where you can swim? Seems like that would be low impact.

Glucosamine is something to think about since I may be getting arthritis in my hands.

L5-S1 facet joint nerve pain left me immobile for 3 days 4 years ago, and moving extremely slow for months after. Physical therapy worked for a bit but I had to do specific exercises everyday just to hold the pain at bay. After reading your post today, I realize I have not done those exercises regularly in months! Certainly the weight loss has helped (no 60 lb cantileer hanging off my front side anymore) . But even more, I get a 90 minute deep tissue massage once a month that keeps the lower back and glute muscles around that nerve loose.... NO MORE PAIN!

I tried swimming, but I am horrible at it. I was doing it at the gym, but I need lessons first. I use the elliptical and cycle. I haven't run much for about a year now. I really miss it. ckworksalot, my nerve pain was also in the region. PT did help me too, mainly I do the cobra and at work I switch between my regular chair and exercise ball. But I am thinking of getting a stand so I can convert my desk to a standing desk.

I got a cardboard standing desk from Chairigami for around $100, one of the cheapest solutions.

That's an interesting article on supermarket shopping, waiting on part 2. Thanks.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing! I have noticed the part it mentioned of the perimeter being infiltrated with other products more and more, no longer the safe and healthier zone. In the produce and meat sections there are always packaged products “related” such as crackers, dips, seasonings, etc. that pair with the fresh things you’re buying, and they’re rarely healthy options, just quick and convenient.
