Eat spinach, not kale

Seven hours of sleep with no wide awake episodes and vivid dreams. I drank four cups of weak coffee.

Morning plank and ten minutes first thing in the morning on the Air Walk Trainer to burn off glycogen.

Saturday was an up day on the Alternate-Day Diet (eat all I want) because I went nuts shopping at Kroger Thursday and for Halloween. At Kroger, I fell into my old habit - the day-old bread rack. The damage done: four buttermilk biscuits for.69, four eclairs for $2.29, and .99 for two slices of yellow cake with fudge icing.

Bought a box of 20 full-size candy bars in case anyone made it up the stairs. For the first time in years about eight did. My neighbors just don't answer the door. I disposed of the rest - the candy, not the trick or treaters. I don't normally eat candy - went for months without sugar in the house, so I gave myself a pass for bingeing.

Subscribe & Save arrived early. You do save but it involves buying Costco quantities. I now have a lifetime supply of whole grain waffle and pancake mix. The good news is that the Cuisinart sandwich maker can also be used to make waffles. I made a mistake because I got chocolate squares for the health benefits, but I paid for the Ghirardelli name. Whether I'll be able to ration myself is another story. I should have got unsweetened cocoa instead and mixed it with a protein shake.

Cardio: one hour on the Air Walk Trainer yesterday - early so I wouldn't be doing cardio while watching "Father Brown" and "DCI Banks" - plus five minutes every hour to offset the effects of sitting. Steps: 803. My new daily average to surpass is 721.

Dreamcatcher, I'm happy to see that you're continuing to work with walking I'm trying to beat my daily average every day my first mini goal is to average a thousand steps a day. Then I'm going to go for 1250. For some reason pedometer shows 1500 as the first goal. Normally I don't do any cardio on Sunday but the battle against sarcopenia is something that I'm going to have to engage in every day if I want to get better. Fortunately, I've got a lot of subscribe and save items to move from the living room to the kitchen and they're pretty heavy. They arrived at the front door which opens into my living rop\om.

Dreamcatcher, I am retired. At various times I was a newspaper publisher, editor, reporter, and photojournalist - not to mention bookstore manager, assistant director of public relations for a 750 bed hospital, janitor and some other stuff that I can't think of at the moment. Inactivity causes sarcopenia so I'm trying to stay active by focusing on gradually increasing the amount of walking I'm doing I hope to get back to strength training soon. I now have a scale which measures muscle mass so have a benchmark to work with. I'm also working on increasing my protein intake.

Dreamcatcher, it sounds like you have accomplished a lot and overcome a lot of obstacles. Your job with the Radisson in Branson sounds like it was challenging. Did you meet any stars? Unfortunately, the newspaper business is going to hell in a handbasket. Newspapers used to be a monopoly in most cities and towns. Then the internet came along and blew a hole in that. First Craigslist came along and took away classified ads which was a major source of revenue. A lot of people now get their news from the internet. I knew newspapers were in trouble when I was a volunteer for the Obama campaign in South Carolina in 2008. I used to go out every morning and get a cup of coffee and buy a newspaper. Most of the volunteers were under 25 and didn't bother to do that. The handwriting was on the wall so to speak. It hasn't gotten any better since then. I guess it was good to get out while the getting was good. I may have gotten PTSD myself from my job as a photojournalist. I was exposed to a fair amount of violence - suicides, murders car wrecks, fires. The internet will continue to disrupt newspapers so decline will continue.
