Determining the difference between the act of fasting vs the act of starving. And go!

I’ll start.

Fasting has a set “end” time.
Starving is endless.

Fasting has a planned meal for the break, which is satisfying and reasonably portioned. Knowing that I will break my fast with a satisfying meal reduces the anxiety I feel doing the fast.
Starving leads to binge eating. There is no satisfying way to starve. Satiety is the antithesis of starving.

Fasting is coordinated with mindfulness of providing ourselves what we need to thrive, while starving is looking for a solution from outside. Satiety is self-control, telling ourselves that we have enough based on internal feelings both physical and emotional.

Meta good point! Fasting for me has to be comfortable and I reserve the right to quit at any time. I’m 8 years out of my ED, not sure if I could have done this before without being triggered and ending right back in the disorder.

Fasting is refraining from eating when the body has sufficient fat stores upon which to feed. Starving is when, in the absence of food, the body lacks sufficient fat stores and cannibalizes muscle, bone, and organ to stay alive.

Fasting for me is feeling control. I am in control not the food. I am glad you can carefully "not eat" for a time for the benefits you find. I sent you a PM. :)

Jimmiepop, spoken like the sage you are. So enlightening. Man. That’s so good. Thank you.

Melissa! Wow! Yes! A feeling of control! It’s okay to have a plan that includes how you will eat, when what where etc, and the fast is a part of that plan. When I starve myself, I think it’s me in control… an illusion..

v.2.0. [IMHO] Fasting is the practice of refraining from eating, and, in some cases, simultaneously refraining from drinking. Fasting from food may be healthfully done (psychologically, physically, spiritually) when the body has sufficient fat stores upon which to feed. Starving occurs when, in the absence of food, whether voluntary or involuntary, the body lacks sufficient fat stores and cannibalizes muscle, bone, and organ to stay alive.
