Interesting article about link between fructose consumption and depression.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201105/could-soda-and-sugar-be-causing-your-depression

It is not so much that it attracted my attention because of the depression part, but I noticed that I do so much better both physically and mentally (clear head, calm, sleep better) when I limit not just sugar (that I did many years ago) but fruit as well. Wheat is out of the window for many reasons, but they say it affects fructose malobsorbers as well.

I do suspect that I have some form of carb or fructose malobsorbtion. I definitely am lactose intolerant (that got better with age as I can now eat fermented dairy like chease, yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream).

"Turns out that in Central Europe, a large percentage (30-50%) of the population suffers from certain types of carbohydrate malabsorption (1)(2). I asked a friend of mine, an academic gastroenterologist who just left Johns Hopkins, what she thought the percentage of Americans was, and she felt it was 15-20%"

"1/3 of the Western European population has fructose malabsorption. "

"Spanish investigators found in a small study that 71% of the depressed adolescents they studied had sugar intolerance, compared to 15% of controls, and that 28% of their known fructose/lactose malabsorbers had depression, which was a higher rate than expected in that population."

And when you think that most of us eat carbs or sweets when we feel depressed. And it only makes it worse.

Anyway just another reason to listen to your body, if I feel better without lots of fruit, that means I should not eat a lot even if I crave the taste.

And don't ask me why after reading this article I had breakfast of yogurt and berries - dairy with fructose. Mind works in mysterious ways.
