Apparently whether you like spicy foods depends on how many taste buds you have. The average person has 40 tastebuds in an area the size of the holes punched in note book paper. If you have less, you like strong tasting foods, if you have more, you enjoy more subtle flavours.

Very interesting! I eat hot sauce on literally every meal.

My theory is that whether someone likes spicy or can’t tolerate (besides exposure at a young age) is nerve/pain receptors and pain perception. Spicy is not really a flavour but a form of pain. I enjoy spicy in moderation but I also have flavour-sensitive taste buds. I notice flavours more strongly than average. Because of that, I can’t tolerate the overwhelming (to me) taste of celery.
