The Geek Squad came and set up my TV and hauled the old one away. The sound has been out on my old one since August, but I don't watch much TV, so it wasn't a big deal. I was about ten when we got our first TV, probably about 15" and three channels. Now, 50" with streaming and Netflix, Prime, YouTube, Roku and more, there are so many choices it overwhelms me. Too many choices, I just turn it off and read a book. But, it's there, all ready to go.

Over the last six months or so, I've stopped watching TV too. It wasn't a conscious decision to do it -- it just sort of happened. My husband watches after I go to bed at 5pm. Some days are boring, but I just don't think of watching TV as a way to cure the boredom. I don't read much (well, it goes in spurts - and I'm not spurting right now). I do read through the Bible every year, though.

I have the TV on nearly 24 hours a day. Not watching it all the time, just need the noise. I can't fall asleep unless it's on. I am thinking of cancelling Dish - the service is just too expensive. I would have to learn about all the things you mention - streaming, etc. I often use my Kindle Fire to watch free stuff with Amazon Prime but don't know anything else. When I watch the news they always say "watch this wherever you get your podcasts". I don't have a clue what they are talking about!

I listen to music instead of having the TV on. Fritzy, podcasts are like the radio, just voice, no picture. The only one I listen to is Rachel Maddow's Ultra, I listen to it on my phone.

I record lots of cooking shows and watch NG, Discovery and History channel and some news channels but don’t watch mainstream TV and don’t have Net Flix or anything similar. I love jigsaw puzzles and ALWAYS have one in progress. Music is my thing and cooking.

I just bought a TV. I didn't have one in my bedroom for years but have been wanting one for a while. I don't know when it arrives. I have no idea where to place it. I read a lot so I'm just getting it to watch movies with my daughter.

All these steaming services and so many channels and there is still nothing good to watch.

I keep something on most of the time when I am not working. It's so something drowns out the ever present tinnitus. I get tired of listening to the ringing of my ears.

We have not had T.V. since December of 2020. Huge time waster.

I needed only one channel, but had to pay for every channel, so cancelled the service. I still don't have a TV service.

Anne, you don't need cable these days, you can just find a streaming service that offers the program you enjoy. Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, Peacock and Hulu are just a few of the streaming services. There are also many free streaming services. Different services cost different amounts, most much less than cable services - Netflix is about $16 per month, Peacock is about $5. You can ask Google which streaming service offers the program you want to watch. Google "How do I get streaming services on my TV?" for more information.

Shir - would I have to have smart tv's to cut the cord for Dish? I have one, but it's not the one I use most of the time.

Fritzy, you don't have to have a smart TV, but I can't explain what you need to do. If you go to Best Buy and talk to the Geek Squad (make an appointment so you don't have to wait in line) they can help you get everything set up.

a\Also depends on where you live but I currently have a digital antenna to pick up local channels. Am taking a tv down to my cabin (I have no internet or anything there yet) and will se if anything pops up with a digital one. currently I have over 50 channels @ no cost. I never use most of them.

We have an antenna and don't have any TV service. The antenna doesn't cost much and it picks up ABC, CBS, NBC, and fox. I'm not much of a TV watcher.

you don't need a smart TV. just get a fire stick from amazon, a Roku or an Apple TV. these devices are far less expensive, they update automatically and if they do need to be replaced, they are far cheaper than a new TV. you simply plug them into a USB port on your TV but you will need internet in your your house, and some require Wifi.

Katsolo is correct, but that is assuming your TV has a USB port. If it does not, then it gets a bit more complicated.

at that point, consider an upgrade. nothing fancy, but TVs are very inexpensive right now for whatever reason.
