I found out in Feb. of this year, then we had a death in the family and I lost my way...I came back yesterday. We can do this with moral support. I'm sorry you have this awful disease.

Eating fewer than 20 carbs is easy. Buy and follow the Atkins book. Eat real food, not crap.

Sorry to hear about all your losses...but the good news is that you are back and determined. I have been able to do phenomenal things with my blood sugar numbers on Atkins...hopefully, you will also be one of those that can control your sugars with a LC lifestyle.

If you tend to be carb heavy in your daily food, it won't be "easy", but it is doable. You're going to have to retrain yourself on what you eat. This is most likely not going to be a temporary thing either; this is a life change that will need to take place and it won't happen over night. There are a lot of great books out there from people like Eades and Atkins that break down why a low-carb way of eating is very beneficial. Lots of groups out there to help support you too in your struggles, fears and wins!

you can do it hun, just do not do any crazy fab diets, portion sizes, meals at the right times, lower carb intake and exercise. Things you can stick to your whole life

Welcome back, Kellie! I'm not currently doing "low carb", but I'm getting my carbs from healthy sources (ie: eating fruit but no bread, pasta, processed junk, etc.). I've done low carb in the past and kept it around 10 carbs a day. It's definitely different, but not hard per se. You can do this!

thank you, great things to think about..the 20 carbs a day has proven impossible so far..but its a work in progress..

Thank you Kellie. 15 grams of carbs equal to one carb, confusing I know. But instead of myself counting the total carbs, i find it easier to count the grams.I try to have between 140-185 grams a day because of my weight.

what?!?!?!?!?! you mean I've been torturing myself totally wrong? ugh..no one EVER told me that.. thank you so much! that's amazing news!

You're welcome. I hope that helps...I was doing the carb counting the way you are doing it and I was so confused, by the end of the day I wanted to cry. My doctor sent me to a Dietitian and she helped me with the carb counting.

I was trying to understand how to keep my carbs under 20, seems like everything except water has carbs..unreal, but when I was counting totally wrong it seemed impossible, now at least I feel like I can do it!

That is so good, I'm very happy I could help you. :)

Kristy-I'm not sure I'm understanding you. I'm also not sure what diet Kellie is doing, but Atkins induction is less than 20 grams of carbs per day. I've never heard 15 grams of carbs equals one carb. But 140 grams of carbs would NOT be acceptable on Atkins.

I just googled it and 15 grams of carbs equals one "serving" of carbs. So that's like saying one can have 20 servings of carbs per day! Again, not making assumptions about anyone's diet here, just wanted to clear up some terminology. On low carb diets, saying things like "20 carbs a day" means 20 grams of carbs per day (though many people use net carbs, #of grams carbs minus #of grams of fiber).

oh man..I knew that was too good to be true..ugh..back to the grind..

Have to agree with Nikki. Don't look at it as giving up foods; just a new variety/new menu/new restaurant. If you simply stick with beans, fish, chicken, and the occasional red meat paired with a salad or steamed veggies, you'll drop 10-15 pounds in 2 weeks. I did Atkins about 8 years ago during another one of my yo-yo's, and was shocked at how fast it worked. Couldn't stay on it though because my cholesterol climbed too high as a result.

Not all carbs are created equal. Most importantly stay clear of simple carbs, refined carbs, and sugars.
