JamaicaBoundNL's Journal, 01 May 15

Well, back to the land of pants, coats, gloves and that dreaded first weigh-in after an 11 day vacation (which is essentially 11 days of restaurant eating for every meal), and 30 hours of travel and 36 hours with no sleep. We traveled from Jamaica to Ontario to Newfoundland to Quebec (diverted because of freezing fog) then back to Newfoundland (5077 mi/8173 km).

While I knew my legs had swollen terribly with fluids, I was completely shocked with the scale this morning. I've always gained 3-4 pounds, but 12?! Holy cow! I really hope it's 80% fluid retention. And, if the number of trips to the bathroom so far today is any indication, I should shed the extra water quickly (oh please let it be water).

I wasn't going to weigh in today, but I really wanted to know how much weight I actually really did gain from eating "out" every meal and doing absolutely nothing but soaking up sun. And top that off with flying and over-nighting in an airport and eating airport food, I figured I was going to be somewhat screwed.

I'm back to my own home now so I should be able to get back into my normal routine of eating properly, working and stretching/exercising (after my toe heals). Every year it seems I try to out-do myself with an injury to the big toe on my right foot. On occasion, when I'm tired and/or have had a few drinks. my foot drops and I stub my big toe, on a concrete-stone walking path. At this rate, I figure I'll break it within a year or two.

The above is a wonderful list of excuses for gaining back every, single, pound that I had lost. :-) So, back at it. Funny enough though; I was still mentally counting calories while on vacation. Thank you FS - I've made the mental switch to eating better.

You will be back on track in no time. Concentrate on low carbs and the extra weight and water will melt off - I promise!

I'm still struggling with swollen legs and transitioning from vacation mode to real life mode, but I've dropped 3 pounds in 2 days. So I'm hoping next week will be productive. I've never really looked at carbs tracking, but I'll do that this week. What would be considered "low"?

Oh dear. I'm so sorry for every bad thing but happy for all the good. That comment about your toe caused me to chuckle.... never mind though, you have time to start over. You will do it! Low carbs (based on my very limited info on Aitkens) is not to go under 50 net carbs for the day (they say 15 g should come from fruits and veg). You can try that, I've been successful with staying below 100 gs... some days. :-)

Thanks for the feedback, Charm. My problem is figuring out where the nasty carbs are coming from, but that just means closer monitoring of my intake. I still have a lot of swelling in my legs and feet that gets worse as the day goes on. So, I hope that means that there is still lots of fluid to go (and not that I should visit the hospital). I'm getting back on track quickly (but I'm SO hungry between meals!). Oh well, it shouldn't be too hard to get back into the swing of things. Let's see how the week goes! :-)

I look at the net carbs (carbs - fibre). But EVERYTHING has carbs so for me, it's hard to do (especially since my diet consists of mainly Jamaican style dishes). Hopefully your leg will go down very soon (I hate hospitals) along with the weight. You will do it... have a great week!

Sodium is a killer, I have learned this the hard way. I don't know if you had a chance to see a previous journal of mine, I had to throw the salsa dip out, it had skyrocketed my weight. I loss the water weight. I also love tomato juice and V8, but I had to cut that out for awhile.

I saw your entry about the salsa. Sodium hides in the tastiest places, unfortunately. We normally don't use salt when cooking and try to use low sodium products so I've never had issues with water retention. But, eating food that you have no control over for 11 days straight was a killer. I knew I was eating way too much sodium, but what can you do. Smoked salmon for breakfast? Really? I just had to have some. Every morning. I tried keeping my portions small which was actually pretty easy, but I think the final culprit was the travel back. Oh well, it is improving, and that's what counts.

its mostly water retention from sodium. It can be shed just as fast as its put on. trust me! You will be back in no time

I'm down 7.5 pounds as of this morning so I'm well on the way to getting back to my goal. I ate out tonight, not by choice, so I know that set me back a bit. I just need to find the "nutritional" information for the half-meal I ate.

Oh dear - I found it elsewhere but keyed it in here - East Side Mario's Riso Italiano. I'm SO glad I only ate half. 1355 mg sodium in the half portion and 505 calories. Okay, I now have a headache and feel sick.
