I have got to get myself some flat plastic containers for leftovers. That's the only strategy that will keep me from eating my entire takeout plate when I eat socially.
69.9 kg Lost so far: 26.2 kg.    Still to go: 1.9 kg.    Diet followed: Reasonably Well.
Gaining 2.5 kg a Week

I was recently on a business trip and we ate in one of my favorite restaurants. The portions were huge, so I only ate about 1/2 of it, but I had noting to do with the rest. It was really good, it was paid for. It was awfully hard to just let it go to waste. So, I really understand how hard it is not to eat what they put down in front of you. (I looked when I got back to my room, that dinner had over 1800 calories in it.)

i hate, really dislike wasting food that can be saved for eating. it drives me crazy.

That sounds like a good strategy. We're all taught not to be wasteful.
