kathyeastlick's Journal, 13 Aug 14

I just came back from my monthly weigh-in at the local medical clinic. By their scales I've lost 13 lbs. Yeah for me!!

It was a tough week to keep from making some really bad food choices. I don't usually go to the fair anymore, but this year I entered a quilt I had made.

Oh my goodness, the aroma's of all the deep fried fair food. I didn't waver, and I managed better walking the long distances through out the grounds. My exercise has paid off some already.

We were put under an evacuation advisory last night due to the forest fires in our area. The high winds picked up yesterday and the fire spread quickly, so that's been a bit of a stress. The fire has now spread to where I walk or hike every night. It will be sad to go back up on the hill and see all the damage. At this point, some of our main roads are being closed to the public. I will have to work hard at getting my exercise inside my home and away from the smoke. I'm not worried at this point about having to leave my new home, but if we do get the word to evacuate, I have my special things packed and am ready to leave.

Kathy, stay safe. Sounds like you had a good day at the fair. What type of quilt did you enter? I'm also a quilter, for 5 years it was my full time business.

Wholefoodnut, We get daily fire updates which gives us some reassurance. Today we are mainly dealing with heavy smoke, which keeps us indoors!! Which means, I might as well work on my quilting!!! Regarding the fair. Our local county fair expressed to our guild that they needed more quilt entries, so a few of us entered our quilts. My quilt wasn't very complicated, just framed sq.'s on the diagonal with piano key boarders. The fabric choice was what made the quilt look good! I didn't get any ribbons but it was fun to see my quilt hanging up with the others!! I love to make quilts, but I'm like many others, rather addicted to it! I found that after a few years of sewing or quilting, I had put on quite a bit of weight from not being very active, and needed to make some changes. So here I am, working hard at getting healthier, and learning to find some balance. If we should get an evacuating order, you can bet my little Singer feather weight, and my fabric will get loaded in the car first!!! Tell me about the business you had for 5 yrs. K.

That's wonderful...both the weight lost and the ability to move more comfortably in your body!

Take care with the smoke. I'm thankful we don't have fires like that. Good for you for entering...I make simple patterns and rely on fabric. It can make a quilt bland or a piece of art just as the quilting can! I have a longarm and quilted quilts as my only job for 5 years. I'm fascinated by the affect the quilting has in transforming the quilt. I have not been doing much with it lately. Between work, exercise, working on my house etc. Not enough time for everything. I'm hoping to get my house projects done so I can re-focus my energies back to quilting. I would love to start teaching long arm, but have dropped out of the quilting scene for the past year or mostly two. Will need to work on some of my own quilts and get them into competition to get my name back out there and also re-join a guild. My finished basement is my studio.

Thank you everyone for your kind words! Tonight, we were determined to go for a hike even if we had to wear masks!! Since there are forest fires on 3 sides of us, it wasn't a very hard decision which area we were going to head in! You have to remember, I HATE taking walks and haven't hiked for 30 yrs. Somewhere along the way in my journey to a healthier life, I found I was starting to enjoy walking, and then hiking followed! What's more amazing is that I'm surviving! and I didn't even die! I never thought 2-3 months ago I would be hiking, I would have laughed at you! It's been such a positive change for me. .....so what thing have you found you enjoy now, or is easier now, that you weren't able to do before? ...anyone? _____________________________________________________________
