Still doing SANE by Jonathan Bailor, and it is working well for me. It is proposed that our family ancestry has something to do with how well we tolerate carbohydrates. My ancestors were from Scandinavia and likely dined mostly of mammals and fish for most of the year with, possibly some berries in the summer. After millions of years of that, the SAD "nutrition" we modern people try to eat doesn't fare well with my ilk.

My blood tests from last week were good. My doctor said (with wide eyes and and incredulous expression on his face, bless his convenional medicine soul) not to change anything I'm doing. Uh..OK Doc. Didn't plan to. Heh, heh, heh. They included all the usual diabetic tests plus comp panel, lipid panel, CBC and vitamins B & D. The highlights are:

HbA1c = 5.4
CHL = 168
HDL = 50
LDL = 85
TRI - 166
Vit B12 = 257
Vit D = 64

Everything was in the "normal" range except the triglycerides, which is interesting, as that number is usually half, or less than half, of what it was this time. Might have to do with the unexplainable increase in blood sugars I was having for the 2 weeks before the test. I hope it's not from the increase in carbohydrates I've taken on with the 10 servings/day of non starchy veggies I've been doing on the SANE way of eating. It's only a "little" high anyway. I'll keep an eye on that.

BG's have been remarkably stable for the past 48 hours (keeping fingers crossed). I have had to steadily drop my basal insulin rates for the midnight to noon period to keep from going low. Basal is down to 12 units/24hr, and total insulin is well under 20 units/24hr. A couple of days ago, I did an n=1 trial on a 115g baked and chilled yam to see if I could back up the results I got from 2 previous trials. Nope! BG rose 100 mg/dl higher that expected from the previous trials. Oh well, resistant starches "sounded" plausible. I did another trial of sorts yesterday with an 80g yam and my regular noon meal (can of albacore with flax and chia). This time I used the standard 1g carb/4g yam that FS supplies for my insulin bolus. BG's stayed flat +or- 8mg/dl all afternoon, so this looks like the true nature of the "cooked and chilled" yam (at least for me). I'll try the exact same meal today to verify. Probably worth it to eat a small amount of yams each day just for the medicinal/nutritional benefits, even if it takes extra insulin to cover. We'll see. More on this in a future report.

Got my new Tanita BIA scale yesterday (really quick delivery by The Competative Edge.com), and after reading up on the instructions, I did a couple of tests. The one I will use for my records is the 1800 hours test as that seems to be the time of day I am best hydrated (an important factor in the consistency of the readings). I will test the same time of day, for the record, from now on. I wish I had this tool 85 lbs ago. Woulda been "interesting." Anyways, here are the results of my first run:
