Started Rx for Glucophage (brand name for metformin). We'll see how much differently it works than the generic. Supposed to be more powerful. We'll see. So far my BG's in the AM (fasting) have been pretty good.

Continuing to keep net carbs in the 50-100g/day. In the past, I only seem to add body fat when my intake goes over 125g/day. Which is perfectly logical as the increase in insulin necessary to cover the higher blood glucose that results from increased carbs will naturally result in the storage of excess calories in the form of body fat and the reduction in metabolism of fatty acids for energy. It doesn't seem to matter how much fat and protein I consume daily, as long as the carbs are kept under 125g/day.

I have been concentrating my efforts on eating high quality proteins and fats with carbs that are organic, high nutrient density, and as many anti-oxidant qualities as possible. I still have "unhealthy meats" ie: sausage and bacon but hopefully, the move to grass fed organic beef will mitigate some of the free radical damage. The relative high intake of anti-oxidants should help in this area also. Eventually I will get to the point where I will make my own natural sausage and can control what's in it.

All in all, the total elimination of wheat and other cereal grains, most processed foods, and large reduction in dairy products has resulted in me feeling much better. I'm sure it is helping me internally. The blood test indicators are all showing this to be true.

Are you doing the blood type diet? My husband and I are trying to follow and it sounds similar to your focus - grass fed beef, no dairy, no wheat - it's tough but we are sliding into this new way of eating slowly without too much pain.

Just starting to investigate the Paleo diet to see if it is right for me. I had read about giving up wheat and after one day of no wheat I actually feel free of the bloated belly. Reading your comment about keeping daily carb intake to under 125g a day, do you recommend that for others or is there a special condition you are treating?

There is a great magazine called Clean Eating that has some pretty delicious recipes for all types of diets and it is all organic but not in the expensive organic sense.

I don't know much about the blood type diet, but I believe that eating more like our bodies were meant to eat (ie: genetically evolved)is the best way to live. Each person is different, so to find what works best for you, you must experiment. Giving up wheat was much easier than I thought, as I was a big time wheataholic. I had to have bread with every meal. I could eat, and did on numerous occasions, a whole loaf of sourdough, or fresh sheepherder's bread in one sitting. I would sit at the toaster and go through a stick of butter and a loaf in an hour and want more. That's the way modern wheat is. It is addictive. It also is very low in valuable nutrients, compared to fruits and vegetables, yet raises blood insulin levels higher than almost any other food. The 125g of carbs is what my tipping point seems to be after much experimentation. As I said above, each person needs to experiment to find what works for them. All the "conventional wisdom" tells us that we need a certain amount of certain foods to have a well rounded diet. This kind of generalization is not useful to people's health. The "experts" have been preaching this tripe for 50 years, and what has happened. Obesity, diabetes, and cancer (not to mention auto-immune diseases, mental disorders, and Alzheimer)has skyrocketed wherever conventional wisdom has followed this plan. Organic is coming down in price, at least in my area. Some organic items are even less than the conventional. I get very good prices on grass fed, hormone and steroid free beef. But at any price, it seems like a better idea to put quality fuel into our body and save on the costs related to poor health in the future. You are what you eat. Besides, many folks would save considerable money by cooking their own meals at home from fresh natural ingredients, rather than eating out.
