Does everyone give themselves little rewards for certain amounts of weight loss? I asked an all female group for some ideas on half way point rewards. I got a few ideas, but I also got several people saying that rewarding your self for something your supposed to do encourages mediocrity. What are y’all thoughts and feelings about rewards?

Reward your efforts and results absolutely ! (Maybe not with food that you are trying to avoid) Celebrate every day that you have moved toward your goal.

Yes! Rewards are good! Love yourself!

I live on rewards. Just live them. It keeps me motivated. Even if they are small ones. Depending on the task, the bigger the task the bigger the reward. For example, reaching half way point, i would reward myself a massage session. Go do something nice for yourself, weight loss journey isn’t easy!

Rewards keep me going. Mine have been fairly small such as a magazine for every 5 lbs I lose. I will be traveling soon so after losing 20 lbs I will buy a new bathing suit.

Thank you all for the support! We’re actually looking for a second car and it will line up perfectly with my half way point. I joked to hubby last night that my reward is a car lol

Rewards are motivational. I think small rewards are great for the mini goals you reach while still reaching for your ultimate goal. Some small rewards are mani/pedi, new make up, new gym clothes, water bottle, and if you exercise at home some new dumbbells, resistance bands etc .

Honestly you should reward yourself daily while staying below caloric maintenance to stay sane long term

I’m a bit mixed here - Firstly, not everyone is the same when it comes to rewarding milestones so I’ll go ahead and share some observations and some insight from my experiences. I encourage positive reinforcement as it keeps us moving forward towards the goal and turns behaviour into habit. I feel a lot of what keeps people going vs what derails them boils down to how strong their motivation and willpower is, and what type of reward you give yourself. For example, if you’re rewarding yourself on achieving a weight loss milestone, treat yourself to a new outfit, something for the house, or that piece of jewelry you’ve been eyeing up - don’t reach for the cheesecake or the extra scoop of chocolate ice cream (this works for some people but for others it won’t. I have an addictive personality and this could be a gateway to building bad habits). I’ve seen people relapse by rewarding themselves poorly and I’ve seen people push themselves harder by rewarding themselves adequately. What I would avoid is rewarding the *little* victories. Sounds tough and perhaps this leans towards the “rewarding mediocrity” point stated above. Pat yourself on the back, share your victory with a friend, and move forward. I had a friend reward himself for going 3 days cigarette free, by treating himself to a cigar. Needless to say he relapsed. Anyways to put a button on this essay, I’d say reward larger milestones with rewards that won’t cause you to slip backwards. Positive reinforcement is so important but recognize the type of person you are. Everyone is different.

James, good points all around. My rewards would never be food as I know what that would lead to at this point. My only reward thus far has been some new clothes that were actually necessary lol

I thinks it’s important to celebrate progress - maybe it is buying a new outfit that fits you better and makes you feel good - something that keeps you motivated for the rest of the goal?

I usually have an outfit that I am trying to get into and celebrate when I can fit into it

rewards = motivation! I definately reward myself with new clothes. Im 11 lbs away from my goal weight now. Its been hard and discouraging at times. I started my weight loss journey on Aug 1/19 @ 175 lbs. Weight loss has been VERY gradual. I am post menopausal and I know that hormones play out here! When I reach my goal weight of 145 lbs....I am going to purchase a very special bracelet that I will wear daily and it will remind me to stay fit and healthy and to always take care of myself! We forget to put ourselves 1st and in the long run it can take it's toll. Good luck everyone!

If rewarding yourself inspires or motivates you then do it. It is not for anyone to judge YOUR journey 😉.
