Despite my food choices, I maintained! Yay!

We decided to cross the border -- from Canada to the US -- for a 1-day roadtrip. We had nothing planned, but we focused on Syracuse, NY and the surrounding areas. The highway and roads seem to be better maintained there than what I know of Eastern Canada (Quebec and some parts of Ontario). They charge toll fees often, so this may help.

I had the privilege to try out Rebel ice cream, which is keto/low-carb friendly. It was so good! I bought vanilla and strawberry. The vanilla one left a bit more of an aftertaste. The strawberry one thawed very quickly. It's unfortunate that the equivalent cannot be found in my area back in Canada. All I can find in grocery stores is the sugar-free, lactose-free ice cream from Chapman's. It is sweetened with maltitol, so I am afraid to try it out. Many people have a higher glycemic response to maltitol; many others also get the runs because of it. I can also find some Halo Top and other similar treats that are not really keto or even low-carb friendly. The last time I ate Halo Top, I was so sick the next day (some kind of stomach flu) and I still avoid this brand.

I read a rumour in Reddit that the So Delicious dairy-free frozen desserts (they are not legally allowed to call it ice cream in Canada if the dessert does not contain cream) can be found in sugar-free versions in Canada. I know the sugar-free ones exist in the US and are sweetened with erythritol and monk fruit. In the stores within my area, only the sugar-laden versions are available.

I also tried out a burrito bowl (salad version) at Chipotle in Watertown, NY. It was good, and they were more generous with the meat and extra guacamole than their equivalents from Canada (I'm thinking of Mucho Burrito and Barburrito -- these burrito shops are generous with the beans and rice, which are so bloating and I don't eat them anymore). This Chipotle did not seem to have cilantro and chipotle sauce available -- which I like -- but I may just have missed them.

I am still amazed by the choice Americans have in their stores, even in small locations. However I would never move in the US, because I would have trouble even finding a low-paying job (my spoken English is not so great) and the health costs and/or insurance would be horrendous!

Not a nice day today, but it's supposed to be better tomorrow. My vacation days flew so fast! I already have to get back to work on Monday. That's OK, I still have the weekend. I hope everybody has a nice weekend. :)
