Crazy weekend. First day at the annual camp out was cold but manageable. I rode the ATV around the property and canoed around the pool, gathering up all the floaties, which made Em laugh. We tossed the football and the frisbee around until we were beginning to get sore. I got a little sleepy around the camp fire, so I crawled into our tent. I was dead asleep and woke up to the sound of a couple of our EZ-up poles snapping in half and realized that our large tent was wrapped around my face. The wind drug the EZ-up along the side of our truck, making an awful crunching of metal sound.

The wind had blown me and the tent half way down the flats. The guys were grabbing things and throwing them inside the truck. I felt icy stings on my face. I grabbed my therm-a-rest, pillow and sleep sack. Husband asked if I wanted to go home. The owner of the ranch told me to head inside the snack shack, where his family was. I laid out my sleeping pad on the floor between his two children's cots. We all tried to sleep, while the wind tossed anything and everything like the opening scene of the Wizard of Oz. In the morning, I heard their son sit up, I pulled my sleeping bag off of my face, he looked very confused and I gave him a good morning smile.

We all emerged to assess the damage. Everything we brought had been stuffed into the cab of the truck. Tarps, the tent, tables, food, clothing, you name it. All I really wanted was my toothbrush and finding that among the piles of chaos was no easy task. The EZ-up was completely destroyed and our truck has a couple of nice long scratches along the fender. As the hail came down, we moved two of the folding tables up into what used to be the dressing area, hung up some make-shift lighting and played dominos. Fortunately, the rain and hail eased up long enough for me to cook dinner. We made an early exit because I wasn't really up for sleeping through the wet and cold on the floor again, that I had just cleared of mice and rat droppings a few days before.

A hot shower and my warm bed have never felt so good.
