Had some problems with diet last saturday. Got it straightened out this week. Down 3# since 7/22 and 20.5# since starting Atkins 6/10.

BMs are more regular but still several days between. Still eating 20 - 30 grams of fiber/day, but need to make sure I get enough water.

BG's were higher than previously due to a Dawn rise that occurs nearly every night starting after midnight and continuing until I bolus (sometimes at a double strength 1:15 ratio). Generally no problems post prandial.

I need to keep my carbs below 20 to keep BG's from going into a rollercoaster, but the liver seems to have a mind of its own and dumps glucose at inappropriate times (like when my BGs are in the normal range or higher).

I started using dual boluses for most meals to see if that would help keep gluconeogenesis (protein conversion to glucose in the liver)from upsetting my BG's too much. Still perfecting it, but so far the results look like they might be worth all the extra time and trouble it takes to calculate boluses based on carbs, protein, and fat. Right now I am doing the full carb bolus immediately and taking 58% of the protein and 10% of the fat grams to compute a square wave (extended duration) bolus that commences immediately after the carb bolus and continues over a period of 2-3 hours (depending on how much insulin is being delivered). This seems to have smoothed out my post prandial BGs, though as I stated earlier, I am still getting a rise after midnight. It may help to extend the nightime square bolus out longer, but many times the after midnight rise is occuring 8-10 hours after the last meal.

My Dr. said that the Gastric emptying test results were normal. That doesn't mean that delayed emptying isn't part of the problem in the wee hours, but it seems less likely considering that I don't have any other symptoms of Gastroparesis (ie: upset stomach, heartburn, post prandial hypoglycemia)
