Battled high fasting BGs most of the week after decreasing basal to get under the hypos I was having 2 weeks ago. The resultant increase in insulin no doubt didn't help with ketogenesis, but I still lost 1 lb. I expect weight loss may pick up when I get my basal rates ironed out. With the increase in fiber this past week, I have had several BMs, and hopefully that proplem has passed.

Currently most of my insulin usage is from basal and correction boluses as a result of high fasting BGs in the morning. As the increased basal starts bringing down the morning numbers, I am using less and less correction bolus. This is resulting in less insulin overall, as it takes much, much more insulin to correct the Dawn effect and its inherent insulin resistance than it does when the basal insulin holds the fasting sugars in check.

Bolus insulin to cover food intake is negligable with 25 carbs/day and only requires 4-5 units/day. Basal today is 13.6 units/day which is up from my lowest 2 weeks ago of 10.3 units/day, but as said earlier, the decrease in morning correction boluses is quite significant. This is because bolus corrections in the morning to cover the Dawn Effect must be at a ratio of 1 unit to 10 mg/dl to overcome the said resistance. Where as, corrections any other time rquires only 1 unit to 30 mg/dl.

In conclusion, since starting Atkins, I have decreased my basal insulin by ~ 9 units/day and my bolus insulin by ~ 25 units/day. Keto-Sticks consistantly show my urine ketones in the 15-40 mg/dl range. With my average BGs coming down each day that I continue ketogenetic eating (yesterday 98 mg/dl), the prognosis looks good. Total weight lost in 5 weeks on Atkins is 14.5 lbs. 23 to go to goal.
