Johanne's Journal, 14 Dec 11

Wednesday, the second dreary, rainy day in a row. I'm so glad it's rain and not snow. We would have had 2 ft. Yesterday went well, food wise. For some reason, writing stuff down with an actual pen makes things so much more real than just listing it here on screen. When I was still losing, I was writing down total cals, carbs, fat, protein and fiber on every day in my small, book memo. On Thursday I would record my weight, and if it was a loss, I would put a little star by it. It sounds childish, but it's the only thing I can see that I was doing differently when I was still losing, along with keeping the calendars I mentioned yesterday.

I even went back to March, the last time I actually lost any appreciable amount of weight (7 1/2 lbs), and that's the only thing I can see. Yesterday, I was much more conscious of those occasional tastes I started to take. It's like pennies. Tastes add up and you're much more apt to stop if you are physically writing it down and accountable.

On another note, my friend who was going to have the bariatric surgery found out that she can't get it scheduled before the end of the year because of insurance hurdles, therefore, she can't afford to have it. On January 1st, her $2500 dollar deductible kicks back in for next year. Her exact words were, "Well, I guess I'll have to do this the hard way instead of the easy way." I personally consider surgery and never, ever being able to have the occasional splurge again the hard way. I told her, at her weight, she can have 2100 calories a day and still lose a lot.

The problem is, she doesn't like healthy food and said so. Did ANY of us want to eat that way when we first started this journey? I'm so happy that my tastes have so totally changed over this last 1 1/2 years! I seldom, if ever, ate fruit. I ate veggies sporadically. I ate microwave meals and meals out of cans. I hadn't actually cooked, except for holidays, in years . . . not since I had been living alone.

Now, my fiber grams per day average 35-45 grams, mostly veg and fruit. But the biggest changes are my blood chemistry, I'm healing and I feel fantastic, even if I never lost another lb. (I'm going to, however . . . all 80 lbs that I have left.)

Well, that's my book for the day. I'm going to go get started on a different corner in another room. I WILL have this house clean for New Year's!

First thank you for sharing the cow calendar it is awesome...not what I expected at all.....no wonder Bren gets one every year......I love the writing things down in a real book.....nothing like it....I have to say I do love the food tracker but paper and pen is awesome. I am so glad your friend can't have that surgery...a friends sister in law had it done in Sept and after many surgeries she is still in hospital she has been at the end more than once, what is healthy about that, she will never be the same again. As you say with my food choices I love them so much better than take out or all the other crap.....I actually think I am hooked on lettuce and cauliflower, sprouts.....many other things like I was on chocolate.......then along with all the good things is as you say you are healing and just feeling so much better....life is good......it really is when you eat better, how can you not choose that for yourself...you can make the rest of your life SO MUCH BETTER.

Bren, I put on a link to get the calendar from the site. There are only like 40 left. That way you don't have to go to Chick-fil-A and be tempted. LOL! Hugs back.

Yvonne, this isn't the same calendar Bren is talking about, but hers is awesome too . . . just not funny. LOL! I couldn't imagine this particular friend willing to go under the knife again. Two summers ago she had a breast reduction that went horribly wrong. For three months, I drove her more than an hour away from home to be put in a hyperbaric chamber for hours. She had to be retaped every day and had drains and tubes. She eventually had to have skin grafts that they took from her thigh, so now her legs are scarred as well. It was gruesome and she still isn't quite right all this time later. How can anyone forget so quickly. She's still planning to have the surgery to have her hiatal hernia repaired and I was in the room when the Dr. explained all that could go wrong with THAT one. I have a severe hiatal hernia, but now that I've lost weight, I no longer have any of the symptoms. Also, gluten was aggravating mine. What that Dr. told her scared the bejeebers out of me. As for writing things down, whether it's a to do list or keeping track of eating, I think actually, physically putting it on paper reinforces the messages in the brain. Yes, eating better is wonderful and makes so much sense. I've learned so much over the last year and a half! Have a great evening!

I believe that. I love her, but sometimes I just want to wring her neck! I think the artist of Brenda's Calendar is Lowell Herrero. The name of it on Amazon is "2012 Cows Cows Cows Wall Calendar". If you plug that in it will bring up the calendar. It's beautiful. If you type in "2012 Lang Calendars", it will bring them all up, including Marjolein Bastin's. I LOVE the Lang calendars. I have pages from old ones framed.

Yvonne, I take it back. I just looked at close ups of the pictures in Brenda's cow calendar and some of them are hilarious!

Hi Johanne! I agree with what you said and about not liking the good foods at first, i TRUELY BELIEVE everyone can train their tastebuds to like something if they will try it more that 3 times. I have done it a few times in the last year myself. :) i haaaaated yogurt and that has changed alot! Lol we spend so many years enjoy the taste of grease fat and salt we have retrain ourselves! :) glad to hear your day went well!!

Shae, as everyone else has mentioned, it's the foods we USED to love that have started to taste bad . . . greasy, too sweet, bland, etc. Thanks for stopping by.
