Johanne's Journal, 27 Oct 11

I watched a report tonight on ABC World News about weight loss and hormone shift. After losing a fair amount of weight, our hormones actually tell us we're hungry whether we really need to eat or not, and our metabolism slows down. Steph and I and many others can attest to this effect. I know that's why I can eat correctly all day and at the end of the day, I feel that I need to gorge myself. I wasn't hungry at all, eating the same foods, until I hit the weight I am now. Now I feel hungrier AFTER I eat than I did before. I'm tempted to only eat in the evening after a day of not being hungry because I haven't set that effect off, but I know that would just make matters worse. What I need to do is accept the fact that I'm going to feel hungry, no matter what, and think myself back into weight loss mode. If I can stick to 1500 calories without blowing it at bedtime, I WILL lose weight. This is a "mind over matter" deal. When I'm hungry, I'll just have a cup of hot green tea and try to ignore my brain waves.

I saw the same report, which is why I joined FatSecret. Got to keep track of my calories like I've never done before. Mind Over Matter - good call.

Wo, welcome. Fat Secret is a great site. I have lost 70 lbs here, but this VERY long "plateau" has lasted long enough. I need to get the last 80 lbs off . . . NOW!

Wow Johanne I wish I had seen this report, I feel exactly like that, I thought it was because I know I am in a much better place than I was in how I feel about myself.....I want to eat at night as you say gorge....it has been a real struggle........I hope it is on again........or I wonder if I can watch it on line somewhere........

Interesting but I am not surprised. When I was going thru my menopause mess I was hungry all the time and gained 30 lbs quickly. I've started to stop reacting on that constant starvation feeling and lost 10 lbs. But it is so hard and my clothes are still tight. I'd trying to lose some more before Christmas since will be in Mexico but will be tough.

I did not see the show but it does make sense... Think of how many women hit menopause or perimenaopause and start to put on weight. Johanne, i think youre plan to drink some hot tea when you are starving is exactly right... As you know, it takes time for our tummies to tell our brain we are full if you drink all your water, you will likely have the full feeling but that does not stop the craving for me. The tea - that seems to help it is warm and you can put splenda in it. It is almost like a dessert in a way. Plus, you get differnt flavors. Another thing you can try is to have some bullion. Again, it really seems to work for me.

Yvonne, in order to make a link to the news report, I had to make a new journal entry. If you click on it you can see the video from last night.

Me, apparently, these are different hormones than the ones that are present in menopause. These activate when you have lost 10% or more of your body weight and are produced specifically to make us gain. It was apparently a defense mechanism left over from ancient times when we might starve to death, so had to put on weight while food was available. I too am trying to get some more off for Christmas. I gave away all my big clothes and my winter hand-me-downs are just about 1" too tight. It's getting pretty cold, and neked little old ladies are just NOT that attractive. Another 10 lbs should get me into them.

E, I do have some lovely flavored green teas and rooibos teas that I will use. I use Truvia instead of Splenda. I like the taste and texture better. I also love broth, but I get the low sodium, no fat kind instead of bouillon since I have to watch fluid retention. I'm hoping they work for me as they do for you

Steph, as you know, I went gluten free in March 1 1/2 years ago. When I slip off the wagon and eat gluten, much too frequently of late, boy, do I regret it for the next few days. As of today, I'm back to my regimen. I've been off kilter since Sunday, a week ago, when I had pan pizza at my son's house and then, this week I ordered one (thin crust . . . like THAT makes a difference, LOL) for myself. I've been so sick. If you are from an ancestry that had gluten as a main element in your diet, you may be able to digest the gluten proteins. All of my ancestry is from northern climes and I just can't handle it. I now know, from all the symptoms presenting since I was a baby, I've been a celiac all my life and was just never diagnosed. It doesn't mean I don't occasionally miss eating the way my immediate family was brought up to eat, even though I know it was killing me. Hugs back dear friend. Love you too!!!
