aggie95's Journal, 30 May 14

Had my PA today for 2013. All is good. But then my manager drops a bomb on me. We are not allowed to change into our exercise clothes and go for a run on our lunch time any more. HR policy. For 2 years we have been doing this and now it'a a no-no!!! All the compliments from everyone in the office telling us we're awesome....

It's been 2 weeks since we moved to our new desks and out of this comes a complaint about our attire. Sigh!!! I guess that's all it takes is one bad apple to spoil it for everyone. It never bothered people before....

Thats crap! I am not sure how they can dictate how you spend your lunch break. Seriously, people want to prevent you from exercising? Go run in your work clothes, then sit next to them smelly...I just read an article yesterday about the problem worldwide with rising levels of obesity....Its a medical concern worldwide! If stinking them out didn't work, I would get a doctors note.

My jaw just dropped on this. I have to admit that I'm waiting for something like this to happen where I work, too, because I do end up eating my lunch at my desk...but as I don't work with the public I don't see much issue. And of course, it will be the out-of-shape, gossips that will be the one to voice the complaint. I'm so sorry. I pray that you'll be able to work something out. You know, offices should really be SUPPORTING a healthy lifestyle, not detouring it. All these companies that office employee incentives for gyms, etc. because it HELPS THEM reduce their health insurance costs, etc. I know...I'm ranting because I'm in the same boat as you. When you only have that one precious lunch time to get something done JUST FOR YOU. It doesn't seem right that management can dictate what you do on YOUR TIME. Good luck.

Can you go run before work? Or immediately after? (Yes, I think the HR policy is crap.)

My thoughts exactly, it's crap! I'm going to simmer down this weekend and then discuss this with my manager on Monday again. I don't see why we can't go at lunch. We are allowed to go in our office clothes for a walk, perhaps I will go running still!! I don't deal with customers or interact with many people at the office. And we have quite a few people tell us how great we look and how dedicate we are too. But this is the only time of day we have to exercise. With young kids and drop offs and pick ups we found that this truly worked for us. Like I said, I will discuss on Monday and pray that we can work something out. Thanks for all the support out there. You guys make me feel like I'm not alone in this situation.

Just say you were going for a walk and a bee was chasing you, you had no choice but to run! Seriously though, they are preventing you from being healthy and that is just utter nonsense. I really hope you can work something out with HR!

I would be very upset about it too. :( I really hope they change their policies on all of this.

It is your lunch hour. Ask your state job rep if they can do it.
