aggie95's Journal, 29 May 14

Soo sad today. My dad loaded up most of his cows for the sale today and I helped. Once they were loaded he was gone and the barn was empty except for 2 cows. Sigh. My son's favourite cow was taken along as well. I was particularly sad about that as she was always so good to him (he's four). He named her 'Strawberry Moustache' as she had a pink nose! We have lots of pictures with him and this cow. We told my son yesterday that Strawberry was leaving. So, he said good-bye and wished her well (which made me shred a tear and again as I'm writing this). But I think my problem is that I don't want me dad to every give up farming even though I think the day is coming closer. He is 81 and is getting slower all the time. Some days it's hard to watch him do things but like I said, I want him to keep going too. Selfish of me I guess.

Well back to work. Hopefully, I can shake these sad feelings and get on with things.

My grandfather raised beef cattle, fortunately his son's were involved in farming, and though they have regular full time jobs, they split the responsibility of the 2 herds between them (ages 76 and 69), my mom (who will be 73 in August), my cousin (age 55) and my cousin's son (age 23). So I do understand. It's hard to see something that was part of the foundation of your father bottlenecking. It's time for someone else to enjoy his livelihood and love. Hugs!!!

I can still remember my feelings of sadness as I watched my grandfathers garden get smaller and smaller as he got older. It's a poignant reminder of our precious time with family. Hope your day gives you things to smile about as it progresses.

That is sad, but he's being realistic. If he doesn't have anyone to completely take over, then why push himself past his limits. Maybe him slowing down makes the reality that he's not invincible harder to handle. I hope you find some happy thoughts and smiles today. :)

Awe. I can't imagine what you're going though. I don't know what I'd do if our barn ever got down to 2 cows. At least he isn't pushing himself though. Downsizing is better than pushing it too far.
