Johanne's Journal, 18 Feb 11

It made it up to 78F yesterday. Not only did it break a record. It blew it out of the water. All but the deepest snow banks are gone. Of course, the upshot is, they are forcasting very cold temps and possible snow next week. That's OK. We've had this lovely break from really bleak winter weather. It's been wonderful.

I seem to be back on track with very little effort. The last month or so, I kept scrubbing at a spot on the bottom, back of my microwave, thinking it was baked on food. The other day, I broke through the spot. It wasn't food. It was rust. The microwave is mounted above my stove. I can't possibly afford to replace it. I'm heating everything on the stove now. Well . . . in the last 20 years, since I've had a microwave, I'd forgotten how much better food tastes when it's heated and cooked the old fashioned way. I always forget, when I have a break from my usual food patterns, how much I love the food I'm eating. Now it tastes even better. Funny, that.

I've communed with my coffee. I've had my comfort breakfast. Now I'm off to tackle the house. Like my weight, it's moving VERY slowly, but it's moving.

Well, here's the deal. I make huge batches of stuff in the crock pot or stew pot and put them up in one cup containers in the freezer. Heating those up is what I was using my microwave for, that and heating water and melting butter, etc. The heating up process is what tastes better in my little 1 qt. pan or 8" frying pan. Even the tea tastes better with water from a tea kettle. Weird. You wouldn't think it would make any difference. Thanks for the good wishes. The same to you and love back atcha with a couple of good hugs thrown in. -- Jo

All the contraptions that clutter up our lives makes us forget how enjoyable the simple life really is.

Rune, isn't it funny? I never had a microwave until I was 45 and yet, I was convinced I couldn't live without one. I remember when I was 15, my father taking us on a special trip to Glen Burnie Mall (halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis). He was an electrical engineer for Westinghouse. He wanted us to see this new contraption they were demoing that could cook cocktail franks in 30 seconds. When they finally went on the market years later, they weren't really affordable for the masses. I got my first 30 years after that demo. I do miss it when I want to warm up a cooling cup of coffee or tea, but except for that, I really don't miss it at all. LOL!
