FullaBella's Journal, 21 Nov 13

Thursday - November 21 and it's still cloudy but not that cold. I've been up since 3am so a great many projects accomplished this morning from figuring out a better lighting system for my storeroom to working in the back yard despite the 'sprinkling'. I went to bed last night at 7pm and slept like the dead - I had told DH if my days were going to consistently begin at 3am they were going to have to end sooner.

Bacon and eggs with biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Filet mignon, butternut squash and baked potato planned for lunch. I did get a couple of bites of the shrimp alfredo leftover from yesterday and even cold it was still pretty good. If that 'cold front' does indeed come in this evening I think a lamb stew would fit the ticket.

My Keurig Vue came in yesterday and I'm stumped and slightly 'underwhelmed' but maybe the 'how did I ever live without this' will kick in after a few days. Right now it feels like The Emporers New Coffee Pot ~ it cost a lot so the coffee must be better. I dunno. I'm a little baffled at the 'cups' because it seems like an awful lot of grounds for one cup of coffee every single time. I haven't tried the 'cafe' function just yet because I was already getting the shakes trying different selections this morning. The programming timer works and I get that it's pretty cool to walk up and have it make a single serving in a matter of minutes and being able to make tea with one touch of a button is nice but I could get a cup from the Cuisinart while it was still brewing and could have gotten hot water from an electric tea pot sooo.. what am I missing?

I've projected that it will be nice when company comes to be able to offer a cup of coffee without brewing a whole pot but then again, I consider visitors like stray dogs and try to avoid serving them or I'll never get rid of 'em, LOL (just KIDDING!) While tossing the little cup in the trash was kind of nifty I ordered one of the refillable ones for the sake of frugality so I'll be right back at rinsing the filter again if I use that. Otherwise, the bean counter in me averages each coffee out at $1.50 a cup and that's just the grounds; at 2-3 cups a day the math is a bit astounding. Suddenly that $7 tub of spinach I gave up this summer doesn't seem so extravagant. So, help me out. Enlighten me before I ship this pampering but pricey little appliance back.

Well, I think I'll go get lunch started. My doc is scheduled to do her first 'house call' on DH today so she'll likely appear just as I plate considering my cosmic timing. Wish me luck. Hope you are all having a good day wherever you are.

Bella

Can't help you on the Keurig. I still brew coffee with an old fashioned percolator with the guts inside. Love the taste of that coffee. Glad to hear you finally got some sleep. Good luck on the house call.

Depends on which coffee you use. Yes, it is quick and very cool in that aspect. I once considered getting one after using nephews for several days, but when I did the arithmetic, decided I'd set up my coffee pot on the timer in the a.m. and have it there for me when I got up.

I had bought a Tassimo a few years back and the love affair with it wore quickly when Starbucks jumped ship and was only available in K-cups. I figured I was missing out because I bought into the "wrong" system and had Keurig envy for quite some time. But now, hearing your disillusionment, I am thinking it is just one of those pricy gadgets that they try to get you hooked on so you'll keep buying the overpriced refills. A friend of mine bought the even pricier Nespresso system. She seems to like it and goes to great lengths making all manner of coffees for company (that system has a milk frother that uses your fresh milk instead of the prepackaged pods). But I am thinking that even that system wouldn't impress me enough to make the price worthwhile. Sucks to be a frugal gourmet! Good to hear you got a decent night's sleep - wish I could say the same (I think it may have been the coffee I had after dinner when we went out last night).

I think it depends more on your love affair with coffee than with the appliance. For me, the Nespresso is so worth it - the office had one installed on all floors (10-15) and though I'd given up coffee for a year, I was right back on it when I tasted how that coffee came out. I had been a Starbucks fan for so long but in recent years the quality seemed to deteriorate. I still use my "french press" carafe at home for a good cup of strong coffee but it's nothing like what the Nespresso can do. And with the milk frother ... oo la la! Ciao Bella! Enjoy your day
