Johanne's Journal, 07 Aug 12

It's Monday and our challenge is underway!

I was gone for the week-end, so I have some catching up to do.

My neighbor works with two people, Marqueta and Damonte, who just had their first baby Sunday. They named her Ashton. We went to visit them in the hospital yesterday. They are really sweet and funny, but they are also gorgeous. Damonte's five year old was there. She is one of the most beautiful children I've ever seen.

The artist in me has a really hard time not staring at her whenever I see her. She has these impossible, saucer sized eyes, skin the color of roses and chocolate and soft, waist-length, wavy hair. She's perfect. Apparently, her mother was white. While I was holding the baby, I told her the baby was as beautiful as she was. She shyly whispered, "She's brown, like me." I guess any other siblings she has are white. She's so incredibly sweet.

The baby is absolutely gorgeous. Of course, with those parents, she couldn't be anything else. She is tiny, only 6.8 lbs. I have lots of good friends of color in all races, but they are older. I've loved and cuddled their children over the years, but this is the first time I've ever held a beautiful, brown little newborn. I just wanted to sneak out of the room with her and bring her home with me. Of course, that would be true with any newborn. LOL! They laughed and said I wouldn't get far. These days the parents and the newborns have electronic bracelets, so no-one else can leave with them. How sad that, in our modern culture, we have to take such precautions.

Saturday was my SCA household's ice cream social. I tried to be very careful about my food, but I enjoyed it immensely. I even had some ice cream and flan. You wouldn't believe the desserts that showed up which, except for the flan of course, all had gluten. I had a steak and some lovely fruit, cheese and some kind of vegetable cold salad. I did have 1/2 slice of a sausage and bacon "roll up." Talk about decadence! OMG!

We still haven't had any rain. The grass is brown, the earth is cracked and my tree's have dropped over 50% of their leaves. It's so sad.

This is day 10 for my wound on my ankle and it looks like it's finally going to heal, thank goodness. It's still painful, but bearable. I'm so glad.

I'm off to fix lunch. See you all later.

I'm thankful for:
I woke up!
Beautiful, healthy new babies.
COFFEE!
My ankle healing at last.
My wonderful friends and family.
A freshly made bed.
My house starting to come together.
Fat Secret that helps me stay on track!

Hugs, everyone!!!

Hey Johanne, new babies are wonderful. I'm glad you got a chance to visit. And your ice cream social sounds special too. Glad I'm not an ice cream person. I imagine it was tough to resist. Of course, what else would desserts have in them but gluten or dairy. Your intolerance saved you!! Sorry about the rain. Hope you get some soon. Will have to go back to find out about your ankle. Hope it heals fast!

Heather, I'm glad I got a chance to visit too. New babies are so special. Unfortunately, they eventually turn into teenagers. Damonte is going to be beating the boys off with sticks with these two. They're BEAUTIFUL! It's funny, but there are lots of times I'm glad for my intolerance. It FREQUENTLY "saves" me. I just called one of my Wiccan friends and asked her if she's sung "Loki's Song." She says she's been thinking about it, but she's afraid it will bring a bad storm instead of just a nice loooooooong drizzle. LOL! Love you. I'm SO glad you're back!!!

Bren, I love the way newborns feel. They're all velvet. This little girl had such a sweet little rosebud mouth and their little fingers and toes just don't look like they can be real. I sure hope we get some rain soon too. I understand that, to catch up, because of the incredibly dry winter, spring and summer, we need 18" of slow, soaking rain. I hate to think what this is going to do to food prices this winter. Many of the farmers out here have had to butcher their livestock because they haven't been able to get or afford the grain to feed them. They announced on the news yesterday that this is the hottest year on record for many of us and it's official. This is the driest year since the dust bowl years of the 30s. Love you and hugs back!
