It's been a year since I started the keto (ketogenic) diet, and I've noticed a few things since that time. So, I thought that I would share a few of my observations. Please, keep in mind that I follow a strict "dirty" keto diet. This means that I do use artificial sweeteners but that my daily intake of net carbs is below 20g. And I don't do "cheat days."

A few days this past year, my carbs has crept up to 30ish grams but this has been a rare exception, and by no means a rule. My first observation is that I have pretty good incentive to stick to the keto lifestyle. Having been on it as long as I have, I notice that if my carbs goes over 20 (especially in one sitting), I begin to feel pretty ill. Excessive carbs now makes me feel light-headed and nauseous. That is pretty good incentive to stay off the carbs.

My second observation is that my blood sugar levels have returned to normal. I was pretty much a type-2 diabetic prior to going on keto, and now my blood sugar is indistinguishable from a normal non-diabetic. But I also know that this is diet-based cure--so if I go off of keto, the diabetes will return.

Third is keto is not a panacea for weight loss and calories still matter, but there is a caveat here. While I have lost weight through calorie reduction while on keto, I have not gained weight when I was not calorie counting. This is an important observation. With typical yoyo dieting, as soon as you stop counting calories, you quickly gain back what you lost--and then you are back to square one. With keto, if I lose some weight that weight for me stays off. So when I stop counting calories, I'm not gaining, instead the weight plateaus. I can then resume a gradual weight loss later, knowing that the weight won't return unless I abandon the ketogenic diet.

Fourth, I'm finding that I'm now eating very few vegetables. I ate a lot of vegetables when I began the lifestyle, but now I find that I only occasionally eat vegetables. I eat a few blueberries (less than a 1/4 cup) a couple of times a week, but I don't eat any other fruit. As I got into the diet, I found that I craved vegetables less and less. And I've noticed no ill-effects or vitamin deficiency.

Finally, there are liabilities to the diet. You won't be popular at a family get-together, even if you insist that they don't make anything special for you and eat nothing. Food is a social lubricant, and eating nothing provides its own social tension especially in a family setting. Also, foreign travel can be more difficult. Traveling to Europe is not an issue where cheese and preserved meats are readily available. But traveling to the Middle East is much more an issue where meat is scarce, cheese is not safe, and the main source of calories is junk carbs (rice and bread).

Am I going to stick to the ketogenic diet after doing it for a year? Absolutely. I have found that the benefits of the keto diet far outweigh the liabilities. I have suffered no long-term health concerns from the food plan, and for me it has just become the normal way to eat. And as far as I'm concerned, a little social inconvenience is a small price to pay for keeping my toes, kidneys, and eyesight.
