Last night I went to Jamie Nichols' dance class at Live Arts LA in Echo Park (as I try to do every M, W, and Sat am). She is an amazing teacher and choreographer. The class is for more advanced dancers-- it's not super hard physically, but her combinations are little works of choreography and are as detailed and demanding as you want them to be. There is always something to reach for and it's a chance to fight to capture the art and integrity of dance--the relationship to the music, detail of execution, emotion, rhythm, communication, style.
I was afraid I'd be toast after doing Day One of BodyBare fitness camp in the morning. But I had the best class I've had in a long time. I felt warmed up and stronger. And I really appreciated the class. If I'm stronger physically I will be able to get closer to the choreography. At least that's what I'm thinking. We'll see. 'Don't get hurt', Jamie said. Yep. Don't get hurt.

Day Two BodyBare fitness camp with David and Shuna Norton. Today we worked on balance, stretching and core--many exercises I had never seen before, some based on yoga. It's pretty clear that we are going to try to train our whole bodies for stability, flexibility, and dynamic strength. People are definitely here to improve how they look, and that's part of it. But you can see that David and Shuna are fit in a very balanced way. I'm definitely finding my imbalances--I can do some things easily and others not at all. I guess some of my muscles have not been used that much and others have. I'd like to fix that.

Fell off the wagon a little yesterday and only made it just over 750 calories. Luckily a low-exercise day, just housework. Pushing it harder today.

Day One BodyBare fitness camp with David and Shuna Norton. Just an hour in the morning five days a week. Hard work--interval training, dynamic moves with weights, stretching, foam rolling (more on that another time). Everybody got through it--and we had all types of people, all ages, all fitnesses--mostly not very fit. My goal is cardio fitness and toning up my sad skinny arms. David and Shuna are both beautiful, fit, and insipring, but totally down to earth. We're working in a great funky space near downtown LA. So far so good.
