The weight is beginning to creep down, but that wasn't the main reason for my diet change... I need to get my cholesterol numbers in line! I know that science has recently indicated that MOST people can get away with consuming dietary fat, but there are an unfortunate few whose cholesterol numbers go wonky if they eat the stuff. Apparently I'm one of those poor souls that can't enjoy a yummy plate of fatty food without consequence. :(

Tendencies for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease run in both sides of my family. I've been a vegetarian since 1978, and thought I'd managed to escape the "family curse" until last year, when my annual cholesterol check last August revealed that my cholesterol had gone up to 209 (66 HDL, 163 Triglycerides, 110 LDL)... I know, not terrible, but my numbers had always been super good in the past (I finally got into menopause recently, so that might have had something to do with it). So I cut sugar, coconut products, and (as ordered by my doctor) reduced my egg consumption to one whole egg every other day (down from two every day before - I do have pet chickens after all!). I went for a recheck in December, and the total cholesterol was UP - 233!!! On the good side, HDL had inched up to 69 and I'd managed to hammer the triglycerides down to 100, but the LDL's had gone UP to 143... I was seriously bummed out. :(

So now I'm in a last ditch effort to avoid taking statins. No egg yolks at all (I buy egg whites and give my precious, yummy fresh eggs away to people with a healthy metabolism!), and no fats but non-saturated (like olive oil, avocadoes, nuts, etc.). I'm also cutting added sugar even more severely (to almost none!), and upping my veggie and whole grain intake. And exercise EVERY DAY! I've been losing weight, and feel healthier, but I won't know how the cholesterol is going until my annual checkup in August. If at that point it is STILL going up, I guess I'll take my statins like a good girl... one can only do so much to fight genetics. I guess if that happens I can console myself that at least I'm healthier now than I started out. :)
