What do you guys think of the 5/2 diet, meaning eating whatever you usually do in 5 days and restricting food intake to 500 calories(for women) for 2 days? Does it work?

I would also really like to know if this works.... I have tried to "fast" for 16 hours (skipping dinner) and it has helped get rid of some of the stubborn tummy weight but I would like to know actual results with 5:2

Hi NankeS.. I don't know if it works but even if it does, that's not getting to the root of countering weightgain. What you ultimately want is balance and the ability to always "eat what you want" in moderation and also working on the "what you want" so that your food desires and wants become healthier. I hope this helps and I just want to encourage you to keep going and continue to pursue health -> weightloss will happen in the process ;) And you're making GREAT process!

hey, it does work....BBO uses that style of weighloss and he's lost over 20kg however you should always remember that u can lose weight but still be unfit and unhealthy......always aim to be healthy and fit first and then the weight will come off on its own

Hi NankeS, I have been on 5:2 (4:3 on good weeks) and it definitely fits my lifestyle. I like a good time with friends over weekends, so I don't even count calories then. In the week I try to make Mondays, Wednesdays and sometimes Fridays my "fast days". I eat extra healthy then. Egg whites / full cream unflavoured yoghurt for breakfast, a high protein snack like another egg white, for lunch a tuna salad and for dinner some low cal fish like hake and a salad / veggies. The fact that I eat low carb on these days keep me full and without cravings. I think it also shrinks my stomach because I eat less on other days. I try to exercise 5 times a week - on "fast" days, I just do cardio and no weights. This has definitely resulted in a lifestyle change for me that I will be able to keep up. I used to fail with diets whenever a special occasion comes up and I cheat. Now I just start anew every Monday. Best of luck with your journey!

I follow 5:2(4:3) + the rules of Intermittent Fasting 16:8. I 've lost over 20kg whilst eating burgers, cakes, pasta, rice, potatoes, pizza, chocolate, ice cream, etc. Offcourse one has to customize their eating to allow them to indulge and still lose weight. The most important factor for me is that it is a sustainable method of weight loss that is very flexible. One can make lots of tweaks to their 5:2 to suit their goals and each week can be adjusted based on your results of the previous week. I enjoy my weekends with no restrictions but I fast on Mon, Wed and Fri. I started my fast days with 600 calories max but pretty soon I was able to switch it to no-food fast days. Read my journal as I documented everything in there. Feel free to ask for help if u want to know anything specific :)

as mentioned earlier always remember that losing weight and being healthy is two different things, I know people who are thin and at their goal weight but are still extreamely unfit, ask them to do a hike up table mountain and they struggle....remember when losing to improve ur fitness

Wow! Thanks for the great response and feedback! Love all the advice you guys have given. I do try and exercise when I can. I just want to change my eating habits up a bit but I tend to fail if I change thing up to much. But I sure want to give this a try...but I absolutely hate weighing everything but aleast it only 2 days...

The effort of weighing things can be a bother but think of it like this : that little bit of effort will achieve weight/fat loss :) Any other method will require major discipline and effort. I weigh my food and update my Food Diary every day. Whilst u can get weight/fat loss by only restricting on 2 days in a week, the rate of weight loss is much higher and more consistent if you weigh everyday. There comes a point where you have to watch what you eat on non-fast days(sometimes referred to as UP DAYS). I initially kept to my RDI on non-fast days and found a way to be able to indulge heavy on weekends and still achieve weight/fat loss. Keep in mind that I have alot to lose on me and eventually I will have to adjust accordingly. In time you get to memorize various foods, quantities and their calorie values and I never ever counted calories until I started this journey almost a year ago. Take your time. Don't make too many changes at once. Start with 2 x 500 calorie fast days a week. Make just 1 change every few weeks. You will get the hang of it very quickly :)
