Big Boy Optimus's Journal, 22 Sep 15

My last meal was Sunday's supper/dessert.

I'm headed towards a 40 Hour Fast with 43 calories(30 Calories on Monday and 13 Calories this morning) consumed in that time. I have no hunger whatsoever.

Ideal conditions to go to the gym now to have a gym session as to my knowledge I should be in full fat burning state. I'll break my fast after midday with a protein shake then come home to have lunch.

Will try to keep today a low carb day so I can maximize my weight/fat loss for Thursday's Weigh-In :)

Does my body burn up muscle mass when I fast ???

Here's two very interesting articles that explains that your body will breakdown fat first before breaking down muscle so if you have excess fat and you goal is fat/weight loss then fasting will be the most effective thing you can do to lose it :)

you're going to be guaranteed to lose muscle mass during that workout, if you're going to be lifting weights then i wouldnt suggest it in a fasted state (such a long fasted state to be specific) but if your going to do cardio then moderate to low intensity cardio should be fine...any HIIT cardio would be detrimental to gaining muscle and you would cause damage....you might not feel it or it might not seem so but you will I'd suggest about an hour be4 working out have 2Tbs of peanut butter and quater-half a banana...that should supply sufficiant glucose and fat for either a nice cardio session or a light weight lifting session without producing too much muscle catabolism....hope that helps

Saige18 I also love eating too much and I am a big eater! lol! I never would have thought that I could do such fasting but my body has adapted itself to be able to do it. It is the result of my few months of 600 Calorie Fast Days with Intermittent Fasting and then I found my hunger decreasing to the point that I could pull off the no-food fasting comfortably. Low carb meals are easy if you don't have any vegetables at all. The rule of thumb is that all vegetables that grow above ground will have lesser carbs than their underground counterparts so if you want to add veggies, google low carb vegetables and you will find lots of lists of them. Lettuce, Cucumber, Peppers, Brinjal, Tomato, Broccoli, Cauliflower, etc. can be used with non-vegetables to create low carb meals. Go through my food diary and you will see some days when I kept my day low carb(under 30g) to get a slight idea for now :)

Ibiza122 I have been doing some reading and its opposite to what you have stated. The thought pattern is that muscles include our heart as an important muscle and the body will not sacrifice its muscle tissue if there is fat available for it to use up first since the body needs to preserve its muscle tissue as best it can when there is no food for survival. Just like fat, the body can't choose just specific areas to lose from and isolate other parts not to lose from so it certainly shouldn't risk breaking down its heart and important muscles until there is no other option left. It's an interesting topic.

i understand what you are saying, but read abit further into it, in order for you to utilize fat only you will need to be in state of ketosis and be keto-adapted.....yes you will be burning fat but you will also be burning muscle, if there isnt any fat in the body to be burnt and you arent in a state of ketosis then you will start breaking down proteins for energy, also muscle breakdown comes from non vital organs so you would mainly lose muscles from your larger muscle groups such as back, quads etc....also training while in such a long fasted state without being keto adapted can lead to various complications, if its a once in a while i guess its ok but to do it on a consistent basis isn't healthy in the medium to long run...gaining muscle is more beneficial to losing weight then losing muscle and fat combined over a set period of time.

glucose stored in the liver should be depleted by now judging by how long u've been fasting, glucose in the muscles cannot be converted to energy and stored in the liver, it remains in the muscles until used up, once depleted the body will start using fat to fuel the muscles also, however if there is no fat available then fat would need to be broken down and converted but because this process takes longer then the actualy conversion of regular glucose, your workout feels more intense and strenuous even thou you'd actually be putting in less effort then you realize and because your muscle fibers are being torn and no glucose is being shipped to them fast enough, you tend you lose muscle mass as well.

It does make sense and thankfully I have loads of fat on me :) Keep in mind that I have a very high body fat percentage but you don't see it on my pic because I'm broad and big framed. My tummy is big but reducing and I have manboobs. lol. So I don't mind sacrificing some muscle(if any) as I reduce my fat stores. I will always get into a muscle building routine later to put on muscle :) Fasting helps increase my GH levels by alot so I should be able to gain what muscle I lost in time. I love experimenting :)
