Sandy701's Journal, 05 Dec 10

It's been a busy weekend. Saturday I walked 3.8 miles in anticipation of taking today off. It was pretty nice out and the neighborhood was quiet with most people off to a local Christmas parade.

In the afternoon, I tackled leaves in the gutter by climbing a ladder with the leaf blower and managed to send most of the leaves onto me!!! I had intended on raking up the leaves that had fallen on the ground in the last week or so to keep things tidy and make it easier to clean up after my dogs. But the gutter leaves had fallen into a landscape bed and so I went to work on the shrubs there, cleaning out the leaves, raking, digging up weeds, pruning, etc. I even unearthed a landscape barrier! And, I found a brand new, still-in-a-wrapper foam kneeling pad! I had a feeling nothing had been done with these beds for years and I believe that even more now, after the work I did. I worked way past sundown and also managed to get the steaks grilled in the dark. All in all, it was a very pleasant day to work outside.

Today, it was much colder due to a front going through. DH took the dogs out and cut short the walk because it was so blustery. Church was fine and we found out our congregation put together 982 boxes for Operation Christmas Child this year, an increase of 80 boxes over last year! It's a big congregation, but I had written that I was worried that there might be a decrease this year due to the economy and the smaller promotional efforts. Glad to see my worry was unfounded!!

DH has been celebrating his passing of the PT test on Friday and has gone off Atkins until he's not really sure when. Nothing he's doing really tempts me; just makes preparing meals and grocery shopping more challenging. Hope he decides what he's going to do before next week's shopping trip.

Today, I'm higher than usual in calories due to revisiting the calories in a chicken leg quarter and eating the last of the Thanksgiving dessert. I actually input the Nutrition Facts from the bag of leg quarters I buy and did the math to find that the leg quarters are in the 600-calorie range, not the 200 or so calories I've been using for these past few months. I have NO idea how ANY chicken leg quarter could contain so few calories and I probably should have realized the error earlier. The only database entry I found for plain chicken leg quarters gave me the 200 or so calorie figure for 1 leg quarter. When you look at the info for a chicken leg, a chicken thigh and a back portion, you can see there's no way the leg quarter can be only 200 or so calories.

So, because the leg quarters are a staple for us on Sundays these days, it seems my calories will tend to the high side on those days. Although I split up the Thanksgiving dessert in my food diary, I actually ate it all around 2:30 and only ate the smaller amount of steak at about 7. I'll be lucky if my weight stays the same for tomorrow....will just have to wait and see.

You are doing a great job Sandy with your WOE. Even though for the past few months, the chicken has been higher in Calories, it doesn't seem to be affecting your weight loss. You are still dropping it. That is great. So glad to hear that hubbies WOE is not tempting you in any way. See how strong you have become. I am very proud of you and all your success so far. With the strength you have, you will be making it to your goal before you know it. Hang in there and again, I am very proud of you my friend.:) I am so glad that you stayed safe on the ladder blowing the leaves out of the gutters. I couldn't take hearing another buddy falling and getting hurt. Hope your weekend was a great one and talk soon.:)

You are doing awesome...I am going to have to check the chicken leg quarters, since I have been using this info also. The last ones I bought were about 1 pound a piece. Crazy, huh? I am going to have to check the package next time I buy since I rewrap them after I get them home. I buy in the 10 pound bag. And we eat them....ALOT!!! Love them broiled! Surely do wish that we could get out of these 180's....

Wow you have been so busy! Bummer about the chicken quarters though! What flavours do you put on them?

Laurie & Laura, thanks for the encouragement and for being my friends. The weight loss may look linear but it "feels" off. I can't describe it any other way except to say "slower," but it just doesn't feel the same way it did a couple months ago. Laurie, this was my first time trying to blow leaves out of the gutters. If I were braver, I'd actually go up on the roof and do a proper job, but I can't summon the courage. Eventually, I'll probably track down a gutter service, but I wanted to get this mound of leaves out of this one area I could access from the ladder before the rain came.

Stef & Squiggs, yes it is crazy about the chicken leg quarters. We also buy in the 10-pound bags and re-package them at home so we can bag the smaller ones together and the larger ones together. It makes them easier to bake. The only seasonings we use on them is Lawry's Seasoned Salt with Pepper...typical Lawry's container but with a black top. They've been a Sunday mainstay for several months now. I can't help but wonder if the person who input the Kirkland leg quarters (the entry I had been using) mistakenly put in the serving size as 1 leg quarter rather than 4 oz. My bag of chicken had the serving size as 4 oz. and 220 calories (I believe), with an indicated 29 servings in the 10-pound bag! One leg quarter is a whole lot more than 4 oz.!!

What I do with my chicken drumsticks is to weigh them cooked and then weigh the bones again after, the difference is what I input :)
