Sandy701's Journal, 31 Jul 13

Up way too early this morning (for me), so I need to be extra careful today. I tend to graze and/or overeat when I'm tired most of the day. Luckily, I'll spend the afternoon at the thrift store, so I'll stay busy. I've got a couple errands to take care of after that, so if I can just keep control until I leave around noon, I "should" be OK.

Part of the reason for getting up earlier is that is was downright chilly for the dogs then....79 degrees.....OMG, be still my heart! LOL! The sun was behind clouds most of the time, but I still took the dogs only 1.5 miles and then did the rest by myself. By 8AM, it was "only" 82 degrees. The ever-present humidity still earns today a 10 on the UGH Index.

I found a whole group of low-carb products on eBay the other day, made by LC Foods Corp. in Raleigh, NC. There were various kinds of mixes for scones, cookies, and banana bread, to name a few (the finished products looked WONDERFUL!). The Nutrition Facts state that 1 slice of bread, as prepared, is 73 calories, 8g. TC, 7g. fiber and just 1g. NC. Hmmmmmm. The ingredients in the dry mix contain "resistant wheat starches" and "digestion resistant polydextrose fiber." What?????

I did not order any of these items, as I've come to believe that if a low-carb item seems too good to be true, it usually is. Pretty soon, one starts seeing diabetics weighing in that the product actually spikes their blood sugar, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but it spikes (eg. Julian breads, Dreamfields pasta, etc. - I know opinions on these products vary).

But I'd be interested to know if anyone has tried any of these LC Foods products and if they still lose weight. That last part is critical......LOL!

I know what you mean regarding getting up early and grazing all day. I'm up around 5:30 AM, which makes for a looong day (I go to bed around 10 or 11 PM). I really have to watch that I don't reach for food out of boredom or sleepiness. Not always easy... As far as Dreamfield's, I'm one of those who CANNOT eat it. Even if cooked al dente (which is what they recommend) I've measured my blood sugar at 20 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours after eating just the pasta on an empty stomach. It raised it in ALL cases to astounding numbers. I did this twice, one week apart, just to make sure. Same results both times. I no longer risk any of those types of "Frankenfoods", heh.

Raven, I've never tried Dreamfields or Julian breads because I've seen others elsewhere online relate exactly what happened to you! I do splurge on Vermont Farms sugar-free pancake mix and that seems to be OK for me. I know I could do up other pancake recipes on site, but I'm lazy and prefer the premixed stuff......IF it doesn't create any problems! Walden Farms has a lot of zero calorie, zero carb foods, but it's too much Frankenfood for my liking. I tried to use up some of their apple butter in a smoothie (with some peanut butter) and that stuff never broke up!!! No matter how long I had it in the blender, the clumps wouldn't mix! I broke them up smaller and they STILL wouldn't dissolve/mix! What was in that stuff???? Heaven only knows....I threw the rest of it away. Again....if it seems too good to be true (zero calories, zero carbs)....... Hope your day is going well. :)

I think you're right about the lo carb food. I bought some Paleo bread the other day to make sandwiches for my rides. I usually buy Udi's. I don't know about other people, but It couldn't hold together for sandwiches. So good that you recognize the pattern between being tired and eating. I'd never thought of that. Will have to pay attention. have a great day!

Sandy, OK regarding the apple butter from Walden's, that's just nasty & scary! I admit I do like their pancake syrup because it's maple-tasting without being icky-sweet, but haven't had it in a long time. Their chocolate sauce makes me gag...likewise their catsup. *shudder*

I have ordered from LC foods, several times. What I still order is their jelly/jam...now That is some good stuff. I also tried some of their sweetener, but I didn't really care for those. They have a mix for sweetened condensed milk & evaporated milk...those worked out ok for my recipes. All in all I think they are really nice people, as I talked with Glen himself!

Heather, 12-step programs have the acronym HALT for times when you're more vulnerable to one's addiction-of-choice.....when you're Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or TIRED!!! Seems to be about the same when working on a change to one's WOE. I've heard good things about Udi's bread, but most are a bit high in carbs for me at this point. I have found a really good one however, (will have to go back and look for the name), that's still 9 NCs per slice, but unlike some breads, it's a reasonably-sized slice and full of good ingredients. DH LOVES it! In fact, he's eaten up the entire loaf most times before I can even work a slice into my daily carb allotment sometime during the week!

Raven, after the apple butter experience, I haven't bought anything else from them. Good to hear it wasn't just me that thought that product was v-e-r-y strange!

GG....so you've got the inside track! Well, maybe after this little lower-carb experiment of mine is wrapped up, I might just give a few products of theirs a try.
