Decent article:

“I also found out that I’m bad at estimating my calorie consumption. During my chamber stay, I told a nutritionist what I’d eaten the day before and filled in a survey of my food consumption over the past year. Based on that, she’d calculated I was eating only 1,500 to 2,000 calories per day. I thought I was being incredibly thorough and generous in my accounting, but if this was really all I ate, I’d be thinner than I am.”

@keyten wow! I figured some folks had seen it but I wasn’t expecting to hear that. That’s awesome.

Great article❣️ I like how thorough it is in explaining how metabolic chambers work and how calories are tracked in studies. More people need to read this. 👍

This is why so many people have trouble losing weight. “If you’ve surveyed the covers of women’s magazines, watched Dr. Oz’s TV show, or strolled down the supplement aisle at the grocery store, you might think your metabolism is a single thing that can be calibrated with “metabolism boosters” like chili peppers or coffee, or by following special diets. In reality, metabolism is the thousands of chemical reactions that turn the energy we eat and drink into fuel in every cell of the body. These reactions change in response to our environments and behaviors, and in ways we have little control over.” “When it comes to diets, the researchers have also debunked the notion that bodies burn more body fat while on a high-fat and low-carb ketogenic diet, compared to a higher-carb diet, despite all the hype.”

People don’t know how to count calories

That is why they struggle 🤪

The BBC show “Secret Eaters” is a good lesson in that. They had people log their intake, but also followed them around, and would reveal their discrepancies at the end of a week. They knew they were being watched too!

That’s because they can’t count. I bet most would have sweared they were counting correctly

Hard pill to swallow

Yes, it's very common and prevalent on this forum as well. People get lazy and forget to add things they ate and/or don't use a food scale. You have people swear up and down they are eating under 1500 and gaining.

yes, I think that besides the technical difficulty, there’s also a very primal part of your brain that doesn’t understand why you’re leaving food uneaten & rationalizes licking the spoon. at least that’s the way it is for me...

I can get lazy on the green veggies but always weigh the protein...

I was just thinking of another way people who cook a lot forget calories. So called no calorie cooking spray. 1 second of spraying is probably 25 calories. Multiply that by 2-3 and cooking several times a day and people are forgetting to count a couple hundred calories of oil.

@cmc I took a break from logging but, same, I measure green veggies by the cup — it’s not the extra broccoli floret that’s breaking the bank

This is true. I even log my vitamins and supplements, bc they have calories too. But I frequently forget to log food I mindlessly clean off my kids’ plates or taste while cooking. Ah well, we try!

@diablo “house always wins” was in ref. to your comment. oil is oil... also the “0 calories” trick is where the euro “calories per 100g” labeling has an advantage.

I count them all. If I forget to count my creatine which I usually always do, I add them somewhere else.
