DairyKing's Journal, 14 Aug 12

Slept in until 4:00. I was exhausted. Wanted to go for a 5 mile jog this morning, but had to settle for 3.5 miles. Kept HR under 70%, which means I'm still having to slow down to just above a quick walk near the end. I'm trusting that, if I continue to follow this program, I will get to the point where I am cruising at a pretty good clip - even at only 70% of my max heart rate.

Did the whey/protein thing immediately after my run, in lieu of breakfast again; but this time I went easy on the ice, and did not experience the excruciating brain freeze that I struggled with yesterday. Hey, at least that proved that I still have one. :)

Only took in about 1200 calories yesterday. I don't want to make that a habit, but it's not like I'm in any danger of wasting away to nothing. Didn't get a lot done on my first day back from vacation - either at work or at home. Managed to squeeze some studying in last night; that's what causes me to not hear the alarm go off - more so than any physical exertion. I guess I'm a little wierd in that regard, but nothing makes me sleep more than hitting the books in the evening.

We've had a reprieve in the weather, with lows in the 60's and highs in the 80's. It's really nice - just wish we could get some more rain out of all this. Looks like tomorrow will be a good day to ride the motorcyle in to work; and maybe a good opportunity to get in a bike (bicycle) ride in the morning when I first get up. Don't laugh, but I'm considering a triathlon next year.

Well, Buddies, enough rambling for now. Have a great day!

Ugh brain freeze... terrible! Glad you didn't have one today. I'm finding a protein shake right after a morning workout is wonderful as well. Enjoy the nice weather!

A triathlon, you're so ambitious. I hope you do. I would consider it if I knew how to swim...or liked biking...so nope!

A triathalon - goodness. That is a goal and a half. Glad you are having nice weather.

Does your whey protein shake taste good? Just wondering. I think it is awesome that you are considering a triathelon. That's biking, swimming, and running - right? But not in that order. I believe you can do it. Then again - easy for me to say. I am basing that observation on your documentation of the kinds of intense activity with which you are consistent here at Fat Secret. It's cool to have something to shoot for. Keep us posted about your decision! Much Respect!

I'm kind of liking the idea of a triathlon. The running would be the toughest part for me. I could do it. Let's make sure we're talking the same language here. According to the International Triathlon Union, and USA Triathlon, the main international race distances are Sprint Distance, which has a 750 metres (0.47 mi) swim, 20 kilometres (12 mi) cycling, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) run; Intermediate (or Standard) distance, commonly referred to as "Olympic distance" (1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) swim, 40 kilometres (25 mi) bike, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) run; the Long Course (1.2 miles (1.9 km) swim, 56 miles (90 km) ride, 13.1 miles (21.1 km) run, such as the Half Ironman), and Ultra Distance (2.4 miles (3.9 km) swim, 112 miles (180 km) ride, and a full marathon: 26.2 miles (42.2 km) run); the most recognized branded Ultra Distance is the Ironman triathlon. I would either do the "Sprint" or the "Olympic" distance one. Forget the half-Ironman and up.

I would love to do a triathlon too! You should do it!

Hi DK. Loving the idea of you guys doing a triathlon, especially in light of the Ironman I cheered on, on Sunday. It was really something. I think you should do it!

W4, actually the whey/protein shake tastes pretty good. Of course, I mix mine with water, and as long as I don't water it down too much, it actually tastes like a chocolate shake. I liked it enough that I bought a chocolate/peanut butter tub tonight to take to work in the morning, in case I get hungry in between meals. It's just a high protein, low fat, low carb, high fiber 140 calorie snack. I found it does curb the appetite. Maybe a big glass of water would also curb the appetite, but I'm not a big water drinker.

BTW, the instructions on the whey/protein mix says that you can substitute milk for the water if you aren't interested in losing weight, or you want to gain weight. Neither of those options appeal to me right now, but I could definitely see where someone who has trouble gaining weight, might benefit from adding whole milk to the mix, and even ice cream. Hmmmm. Nope. I ain't gonna do that!

Also, W4, the order is exactly reversed: running, swimming, and then biking. It actually works pretty well; you get all heated up from the run, jump into the cold water, swim a 1/2 mile of so, and get out of the water and run to your bike and go like Heather. :)

I think the sprint sounds doable. Even the olympic sounds like too much for me. I mix my protein with light soy milk. It is delicious that way and is less than 300 calories. The shake and an apple is my breakfast 90% of the time. I love it. I certainly wouldn't consider it a weight gainer.

I love my whey protein with spinach and frozen fruit, lime juice and water (no ice). The protein powder makes the shake a bit creamier, and it is a nice fresh green color since most of the fruit is light-colored (no dark berries).

Heidi, is your whey protein mix unflavored? Tglenna, I bet the mix 'would' taste more like a shake, when mixed with soy milk; I hadn't thought of that - although the chocolate one tastes pretty good blended with water and crushed ice.
