melissatwa's Journal, 24 May 20

Yesterday I went for a walk/hike and discovered a whole wonderful forest trail about 2.5 miles from my house. I had heard of it but never knew where to find the entrance or how incredible it was. I had a nice 8 mile round trip and just under 900 foot elevation gain. Being able to walk there from my house makes it an absolute treasure. I'll be back! And, yes, it really is that green!

Thanks, guys! ❤️ I do feel so very blessed! What is so crazy is after living in this general area for more than 20 years, I didn't know about this hike. I wandered around on trails up and down the slope for about 3 wonderful miles yesterday. Nope, wifey, I've never heard of ticks being a problem here. We don't even have many mosquitoes... Like hardly any. No snakes but little harmless ones. Some plant life is nasty like stinging nettles and devil's club, but they are easy to avoid. Greatest risk is stepping on a slug! Blah!!!!

I'm so thankful you can enjoy this beautiful place with me! There is no "old growth," but because things grow so rapidly here, some of the trees are absolutely enormously tall. In all my wanderings on the trails I saw three teens with their bikes on one accessible trail and a family of four just leaving. Otherwise I saw not another soul. It was so peaceful and still.

You’re so brave Melissa. I’d never go ‘in the woods’ alone. It terrifies me, bears, coyotes, and the like. But I’m thinking your woods is friendlier than mine. LOL

Hahaha, wifey! This is a very tame forest. Doubtless there are lots of coyotes, but they are busy eating the abundant rabbits. I get nervous hiking alone in BC at my in-laws. So many bears! Only the mamas usually worry me, but high up there are grizzlies, which no matter the age or gender are beyond scary. I only see "sign" but I've never run into any grizzlies. I've seen black bears from time to time. I'm just so noisy... Whistling and clapping as I go! It keeps my heart rate up for sure! 😁

How beautiful! I forget where you are from...it's hard to remember with people being all over. Lucky you, if you have no ticks. We don't have that luxury....but no problem....just check after a walk. We also don't have grizzlies....but we do have black bears. I don't usually walk alone, so I have Hubby to protect me 😊

Thanks! ❤️ I totally agree that is it tough to keep track of where folks are from! I'm in the northwest... A bit north of Seattle. It is just suburb after suburb, but deliberate attempts have been made to keep large spaces free of development. I am so glad. And ticks.... My gosh I'd be so scared of them! Yuck, yuck, yikes! 😁
